Kinmartin: Petr-ifying Influence Carries Fresh Bite

Matchweek 28 facts and figures, for The Paragon and beyond….

ABSENT MINDED
Ever an influence, Stiliyan Petrov was in the lineup all the way through the team’s first 27 games last season. Then came the shocking leukemia diagnosis at this point here before Round 28 that has threatened to end his career and weakened the core of the AV roster significantly. Below is one indication about how heavy the loss of Petrov’s immense production continues to weigh.

They are his 27-game totals during the 2011-2012 campaign and where they rank inside of this season’s 27-game team totals.

NOT IN
Football’s “Greaves Yard” within the penalty area — the 12-yard doorstep (20 yards wide) in front of the penalty box — is obviously glowing property. There, goal-seekers have a firing range with a comprehensive view of the goal frame and prosperous angles available to target.

It is a striker’s zone no doubt, so naturally Villa’s most active shooters in Greaves territory are all forwards. Unfortunately, midfielders have been no more active than defenders inside Greaves yardage….both units have the same total for shots (15) within its borders. Below is the full team list for shots inside the Greaves area.

Benteke 35
Weimann 22
Agbonlahor 10
Bent 10
Clark 7
Vlaar 4
Albrighton 3
Holman 3
Ireland 3
Lowton 3
Baker 2
Bannnan 2
Bowery 2
El Ahmadi 1
Dawkins 1
Herd 1
Lichaj 1
Westwood 1

RIGHT AHEAD
Tonight’s start for Matt Lowton will keep him on top of this season’s list for most starts in the Premier League at right back. And, with any kind of strong finish to the campaign, perhaps he can slide in as the come-up No. 3 candidate at right back in the England national team picture behind Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker (the two dynamic, perennial top picks at right back for England at the moment).

Below is a list of the primary right backs (most-started) for all 20 teams in the EPL this season, in order of their total starting appearances. Asterisks (*) single out the English-born group and ages are in paranthesis ( ).

  1. Kinmartin hope you are going to take this on the chin.Yes we as Villa family know how great a player Stan Petrov is and yes he is a tremendouse loss to the team and we could do with another player of his caliber. But do you not think that there are more pressing issues fans want to comment on instead of statistical drivel. What about posting something asking the fans what they think about the state of the club and more importantly what they think the future holds.
As at this moment in time we are in dire straights and the future does not look rosy for me past statistics mean nothing when we are watching our club dying a slow death.

Not sure Kyle Walker is 29……

  4. Good work as usual Patrick, cheers mate.

    Yep, definitely missing Petrov.

  5. I very much appreciate Patrick’s stats and they clear my head so I hope he keeps them coming. Patrick is actually American and is a fan from California. So he doesn’t have the dubious pleasure of actually going down to Villa Park and watching the ups and downs. But he is a genuine fan and I don’t see why anyone criticises him. Keep it coming Patrick!

  6. Ha ha, Terry complaining people are trying to post anything other than misery, depression and anything where he can’t post “I told you so”. I like these statistical articles
