What do we know about Troy Deeney? We apparently made him an offer.

I met with a newish friend today. One I’ve known since the summer and have spent a lot of time chatting to, about all sorts of things.
Certainly enough time to gauge whether someone’s straight or not; in my experience, that is.

Anyway, this chap has very little interest in football (although when given the choice of Villa or Blues, he sided with Villa), hence it’s never really come up in conversation, final scores apart.

Until the name Troy Deeney came up, where my friend immediately says that he knows him and his mother (Emily?) very well.

So what did I garner from the conversation?

Well, first off, I got the story about his prison sentence. Apparently Troy was somewhat unlucky, in that he wasn’t really involved, but was more helping defend someone. Apparently the CCTV made things look worse than they were.
I personally took that one with a small pinch of salt, but there you go.

Anyway, more juicy info that was offered was that Deeney is currently earning around £3k a week.
And that quite recently, Villa offered him around £24-25k a week.

Which begs the question “So why haven’t we got him then?”.
Which is exactly the question my friend asked me, as he didn’t know either.

I thought it all quite strange until my friend told me that although Deeney was a Villa trainee, he is really a raving nose and has their badge on the back of one of his legs.

I know I read elsewhere that he scrounged all the complimentary tickets he could from his team-mates on Saturday and took loads of his family and friends down the shit.

I wonder if that’s why we didn’t get him in the window; ie, he’s unsure?

Or could it be we’ll get him in the summer as a replacement for either Weimann, Bent or Benteke?

  1. An ex-con would surely take an eight fold wage increase if offered ?

There have been plenty players cross many a divide for cash.

I’d take the whole thing with a pinch of salt. Very much doubt that we are offering these lower league younger players that sort of money, £8k – £15k per week tops, with decent bonus add-ons I would hope.

  3. I don’t understand anything about this story. WHo is Troy Deeney? If he is a villa trainee then we would have him on the books anyway. I have not heard of him on the fringes, and there are players whose names do come up.

There are lots of rumours flying about, it would be sensible to cut them out and stick to hard fact

    • Handsome fella, plays for Watford (when he’s not kicking the shit out of people) oh and he’s a nose.

    • And he has a quite unremarkable goal scoring record 65 in 259 appearances including 8 for Halesowen Town! Go get him Randy.

    • I flagged Deeney up as the man to sign in November, December and January.
He is from Birmingham, now scoring for Watford (second in Championship) and sometimes at a goal a game. Moreover goal per chance conversion rate is excellent.

He is out of contract in the summer.

Watford in December were about 8th but now are play-off certs and automatic promotion probables.

      He now holds the cards.

My view was that when Villa were looking like they would sell Bent, and under PL are never going to use him a lot (regardless of whether they should) then as a man on the bench for the Benteke Plan A, he would fir the PL and RL profile.

Cheap transfer (only a few months left on his contract), low wages at Watford having signed from Walsall for maybe £500 k but more likely £300 k.

They could have got him for £2 million and at 24, a goal scorer and someone who can cross a ball, then improvement/sell on iat profit s a strong possibility.

The one bit which rings true in the article is £3k at Watford.

The court case is well documented in local papers.

The idea that Villa would offer £24 to £25 k is nonsense under this regime. £15 k maybe.

I talked to a few national newspaper Sport desks over December-January.

They had not heard a whisper about Villa being in for Deeney.

I think he would sign for any Premiership club if the alternative was The Championship.

In early December it looked like Villa would stay up and Watford struggle to make the play-offs.

      How things change.

As a Villa trainee kicked out to Walsall, he may not have happy memories but they are likely to attach to managers and coaches long gone.

So what if as a punter he supports Birmingham City ?

Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Robie Fowler were Everton fans.

The Everton Captain supports two teams ahead of Everton.

Lampard was a West Ham fan.

Benteke probably supports -as a punter – a Belgium club and a few London/Manchester clubs ahead of Villa.

Genuine Villa fans often can not deliver on the pitch. Non-Villa fans often do. It is called PROFESSIONAL football for a reason.

Professional barristers and solicitors often win criminal and civil cases when as ordinary members of the public they would be cheering for the other side.

I also suggested Deeney in case next season is a lower league one where he is just about the season’s top scorer and knows the coach journey, layout of dressing-rooms, tunnels etc which can make a difference – look at teams which go down and are totally shell shocked at the lower quality facilities from The Premiership away games. They do not all fly up and down, or stay the night before in 5 star hotels like in The Big boys League.

Now Deeney can afford to wait and see.

Good job Reading, Wigan, Norwich, Southampton did not snap him up this season.

  4. Seriously underwhelmed at the prospect of signing this rabble!

  5. Lol..didnt he score 2 against the scum on Saturday…his family must have been really proud of him on the day…..only a scumbag could do that!

  6. BWS… LOL…. anyone from the Baggies want to join in?

  7. In other news, how stupid is Agbonlahor?

The boy is a first class idiot, he has belittled Arsenal by claiming Benteke can join bigger, a few days away from their game against us, thus giving them something to prove, they will no doubt come out and wallop us now.

    Cheers Gabby you epic moron.

    • I think that’s a bit harsh on Gabby.

If you read the whole article, he doesn’t name any clubs at all, but suggests that Benteke would probably be good enough to play for the top two teams and get regular CL football and trophies.

If Arsenal and Spurs want to assume that means other clubs, that’s up to them.

I really don’t think that at this level a side would perform any differently to comments or press spin. We would have beaten Arsenal but now it’ll be tricky is nonsense.

As a mate said last night though, the way their defence played, we could be looking at four or five all !

  8. Sorry but there is no way on gods green earth we would approach a player on £3k per week and suddenly offer him £24k, it makes no sense, business or otherwise and please bear in mind that is, apparently, more than Vlaar who left a Champions League team to join us. Also, if we had, do you really think he would have turned it down????

  9. Lol.. we wont be offering him 25K a week when he is on 3!!

As for being a noser.. we fans sometimes get too blinkered.. i bet if any of us were a football fan we wouldn’t hesitate rocking up at Villa Park and smashing in a hat trick.. anyone who says otherwise is a liar :-)

  10. oops.. fan should have been footballer.. :-)

  11. troy is a good lad, got strength and pace, and seems to be doing really well at watford, previously at Walsall.

He used to play for chelmsley town a few years back where he played in midfield or as a front man.

he is out of contract at watford at the end of the season. his brother was also at the villa until he was released.

  12. Sky man Jeff Stelling puts the boot into Villa on Sarah Millican show
“You don’t see any football. You don’t see any goals, you don’t see any near misses, you don’t see any shots… it’s a bit like watching Aston Villa.”

Quite funny Jeff but a bit rich from a Hartlepool fan.

    • About as funny as she is! How anyone can make a career from talking about how many cakes she can eat and how much she hates blokes is beyond me, modern day Jo Brand i.e. not funny.

  13. This would be just like Sunderland signing Danny Graham. The club doesn’t give a toss what the fans think.

  14. I find it quite strange that some of you think we wouldn’t offer Deeney £25k, when he’s only on £3k at the moment.
What do you think players in demand go for in the Prem?

Anyway, I met my friend again today. I asked him to confirm everything and asked him exactly who the source was.
He actually told me, after making me promise I wouldn’t say anything specific.

In fairness, my friend doesn’t know the exact ins and outs of it, as he’s not the sort of person to ask about money etc in detail.
But suffice to say, I am 99% certain that what I’ve previously said, actually happened and Deeney was made the offer at exactly that money.
And I’m not prone to listening to any old crap that I’m told, trust me.

    As for those of you belittling his scoring record; it’s actually 14 in 28 this season up to now, albeit in the championship. Not bad, at all;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_Deeney

My guess is that we made the offer, but Watford said no.

Unless something changes (which we know they do, all the time in footy), I’d expect him to be at the Villa in the summer.

    • I sincerely believe you.

I just wonder if the friend got all the details accurate.
The 3k a week as he signed on a low transfer fee from Walsall and had only played Division 1 rings true.
The £24-£25 k under previous managers would make sense. Even 12 months ago which may be where there is confusion on timing of the offer.
Under PL and RL an offer matching or lower than Benteke seems top rates for a non-international and non-Prem player.
      I thought Benteke was on £20 k.
I would believe £25 k in January 2012. But £15 k in January 2013 under the present budget.
He could have got the timing wrong.

(I would have believed £35 k under MON)

Regardless I think that Villa should have signed Deeney a year ago, in January and asap. He can also cross a ball.

If Bent is going in the summer, then whichever league Villa are in, Deeney looks a great free signing even on £25 k a week.

He will put in s a shift – and please God there is no Birmingham City taunts.

If Steven Gerrard offered to come to Villa for a season, would people make him denounce Liverpool teams in public ? Ditto Frank Lampard and London clubs ?

OK under Randy proven Big Boys will not touch Villa, but under the next owner they might.

Does Tevez support Man City or Man Utd ? Do the City fans care when he regularly scores against Utd.

      • No, Jonathan, the timing isn’t wrong, it’s absolutely correct, according to my source, who I stand by, given that he has no interest, either way.
It was very recent and Lambert wants this player, simple.
The £25k probably involves serious incentives, I suspect.

Whether it will happen, is of course a different thing.

I’m not really convinced about him being good enough for the Villa, especially given MY aspirations for the team, but he seems the right sort for Lambert.

  15. Well he fits the profile of preparing for the championship doesn;t he.

However for this to be true you have to believe we would offer 25K a week in wages for a player. Look at teh winter and the very low wages.

I suspect this could have been true if we sold BEnt though, maybe that is what stopped it, no one wanted Bent or could afford him.
