Johnathan wrote this in the comments and I think it deserves a post.
My belief about Lerner and Jack Hayward is that you can not do it at long distance UNLESS you have Kuwaiti billions to spend on the hobby/ or PR for much wider business interests. I think even Manchester United will fall apart with long distance owners once Sir Alex retires. Roman Abramovich is at most games, takes feedback from fans, turns up to watch training, talks to the senior players etc
The Man City owners have limitless funds (and even they are out of the Champions League early doors for the second year in a row and may win zip this year). Randy like Sir Jack just does not have enough money to consistently give it a real go – shrugging off expensive mistakes en route to silver trophies and global brandname – Moreover, neither is he in Aston getting to know the team, other staff, fans, media. He is not studying the market in managers, players, etc
Unless Randy was 100% expecting to stay up this season, his lack of spending is incomprehensible given the lack of TV money in the Championship.
Maybe HS2 has increased the value of Villa ground for sale for other commercial use. Just after Star Wars trilogy was made there, 80% of Elstree Studios was sold off to a supermarket group and for flats just north of London. Shockwaves would be less in The Championship. No accusation, just bewilderment that no money to spend in transfer window.
Richard Keyes on Talk Sport radio said, with Andy Gray concurring, that AM told them he was given two crystal clear first season objectives when he took the Villa job: halve the wage bill; avoid relegation.
Having achieved these, he was gutted to be sacked.
I think many owe him an apology if the above facts are accurate.
Has PL been told to halve it again ? If he has, then it explains his sending the high earners to Coventry. Alas he seems to be sending the whole club to Coventry home and away in 2014-15
I wish Villa had the QPR manager and owners !
If they stay up, they will have some real top players next season.
I doubt Watford’s Troy Deeney would sign for Villa now ! He can both score and cross a ball.
God bless all Villa fans. A real miracle is now needed.
