Terry Jones has submitted this article and it’s not about a change of manager or a change of owner. It’s about the placement of a technical director.
Time now to bring in a Technical Director of football as Paul Lambert after yet more humiliation by a lower league club as yet again proven that he does not have the ability to attract the right players to the club to push it forward.
He had funds in the summer and spent those funds on players that have turned out to be no more than a disaster. Does he need help? I say yes especially in the transfer market and in some respects as to tactics. Wether he would accept this remains to be seen but unless he is prepared to accept the fact that his project of bringing in young players with no experience within the team is just not going to work.
Now the burning question is whom would we want to take on this role we need someone whom knows English football and also as contacts abroad and whom can attract maybe good young quality players but also those with older heads on their shoulders.
So here are a few names that may be in the frame to take on the role. One would be Graham Taylor or should we look abroad say bring back Gerard Houllier maybe a role that would not affect his health too much; or how about say Fabio Capello. He was the one English manager that gave our players a chance on the international level,
On the positive side is it to late for change or are we going to see our great club enter into the wilderness of the lower leagues or even worse titter on the brink of extinction the same as the Noses. Thus leaving our City of Birmingham without a football team.
On your last comment, could you actually imagine a life without Villa or the team you support, what the hell would you do at weekends? Your life wouldnt be ruined or full of elation on a Saturday night after a game.
Would people still like and watch football knowing that your team has gone, would people turn to another team? Surely thats not an option?
Frankly for me it is. I love football first and foremost..Villa is secondary to that. Without Villa I could still watch Football, without Football there would be no Villa. Currently, of all the teams scrapping it out down there, we are playing the worst football. That says it all…we need to pickup a couple of wins on the bounce by hook or by crook or come April, we’re struggling.
I think El-Ahamadi is a miss currently too…the one player who could mop up in front of defence. Delph tries, but he’s too attacking inclined to be that disciplined.
Im the opposite if anything. But can u have one without the other?
It is too late lerner is getting ready to sell up think about it, in 2010 he heires paul faulkner to get the busniess side of things done to rain in his money, he then highers managers who can work with a small budget, and get rid of high earners relplace them with youngsters on low wages its why lambert left the high earners out, lerner will strip the club of high wages so we will look better to a buyer and to get most of his money back he dosent care where he leaves us
OK, Technical Director is not going to happen for two very good reasons: 1) Lerner, Faulkner and Lambert have recently held discussions about the vision of the club apparently and are all in agreement young hungry talent is best for us and it’ll come good, and 2) Fiddling from upon high is only ever successful when you’re dealing with a club who have established high revenue streams, established global marketing and have big bucks…we have pretty much none of those currently.
Whilst I have now, following seeing how bad our defensive mistakes have been in the past few weeks, called for Lambert to go, I can understand why many are sticking with him. Christ, I’d love us to be moving forward with youth, but for me that’s not what is happening. Let me break it down.
- To inspire youth and move them on in their career you need to have experience around them. We have little (although admittedly, we have some).
- To ensure that the youth do progress, they are usually blood in games where the likelihood of victory is high so that their fragile confidence isn’t left in tatters and their natural ability can shine through and be honed….we have no such games.
- Saying that these defeats and adversity will build character is like saying an Army who is consistently outgunned, out manned and out maneuvered, will eventually win the war. With more defeat comes more questioning of talent, more confidence gulfs and self-esteem gaps.
We need a pick me up…little things like a hard biting challenge that gets the crowd going…a perfect goal scored or a last ditch block which rallies the troops. This comes from leaders and again, we have little of them.
Stephen Ireland for me epitomises our team. He is a talented guy…no doubt about it…but he is as inconsistent as they come. What are the youth to learn from such players?
At the end of the day, Lambert hasn’t improved our youth…he’s only broken the once good players they were, and forever scarred them.
I agree with most of your points, I’d definitely say Ireland epitomises our team. Uninterested, pedestrian, unprofessional, greedy anateur and basically a total waste of a team number 90% of the time. The fact we have players like him to rely on in our battle against relegation, is exactly why I think we will fail in that battle with the current players we have.
Its also the reason why he will not sack lambert or buy new players, this is an owener who lost intrest 3years ago and he just wants his money back lerner does not care us and the browns are play things but because he couldnt keep his dick in his pants we hav to suffer this, he wants us to go down he can get rid of all high earners, get cheap youngsters in have a manager who has been there before then he sell up and get his money back its all part of his plan im sure of it
This rarely if ever works and would be another wage going on a non playing member of staff which would be completly wrong considering how poor our first team is. I was asked where i though our current squad (Without Benteke, bent or Vlaar) all of whomb will leave after we go down will finish in next years championship, and i would have to say bottom 6, if Learner really is getting ready to sell he is going about it in a very strange way. We are going to be talked about in the same way Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds are now.

I remember how i felt when we went down in 87………….Trust me is was never as bad as this.
I’ve missed 3 games, in all competitions, home and away, in 28 years. This is without a shadow of a doubt the worst Villa team i have ever witnessed.
The owner has blatantly lost interest, the manager is so tactically clueless it’s frightening and the team really really are poor.
I really don’t know what to say apart from i will never step foot in vp until Lerner, Faulkner and Lambert are no longer there.
All my faith, hope and belief was taken from me on Tuesday night.
I’ll show my opinion by using actions……….not words……….enough is enough.
We dont want to bring in new players and be stuck financially if we go down
I don’t think Lerner has lost interest, I think unfortunately it’s been a downward spiral since MON left. He backed MON to the hilt but some of his signings were awful so financially we’re in a pickle right there and then. The next few managers (Houllier, McLeish) can’t do anything with the team so Lerner has, and who can blame him, told whoever comes in (this time Lambert) that they will have to work with what they’ve got considering the cash he’s put into the club.
Couple that with the fact £25mil was spent on players in the summer (not a shocking amount of money but not half bad considering our previous forays into the Transfer market) and I can’t blame him one bit for wanting to see us live to our means.
I still Blame MON for poor judgement. A Chairman must back his manager’s choices…he did and look where that got us.
Once bitten, twice shy.
That is football, and lerner allowed some of these puzzling signings but all of this is ages ago, we need investment now as they will lose fans if we get relegated (all clubs do). Sponsorship revenue will drop and so will merchandise sales. Aston Villa football club will lose interest from abroad and also a generation of potential fans.
As a logical person this whole not investing seems very short term and very damaging to the long term future of the club it all seems very defeatist, it is apparent to all fans that a defensive midfielder and a Cb are needed. We also need all of our big earners to step up to the mark.
Talking about MON the club only have Petrov, Dunne and Warnock left from that era all others have since moved on and so the situation we now find ourselves in is because of the reaction to the MON years and not the MON years as was the case upto the end of last season
So throw in the towel now and have absolutely no guarantees of returning any time soon and championship income in order to rebuild our team. Or invest a little to have a better chance at staying up, so we can rebuild ourselves as a prem team.
That was a quote from pat murphy earlier coming from the club
Lerner is getting ready to sell up its why faulkner was appointed, its why minler, young and downing was sold, its why eck was appointed the only reason he was sacked caused fans would not renew so lambert was appointed so he could replace the high earners with cheap youngsters, he get his money back when he sells up without high earners this last 3years has been about raking it back in believe me they be gone soon
Unless miracles happen, I don’t think we’ll fall for the ST con again next season.
There will be some mugs who will do because ‘it’s what we do’!. Sigh.
Young and hungry talent but if theres no quality in it no point at all
Quality and hard work are what makes a decent team. The team work hard enough but their quality is zilch
It should have been Gerard Houllier! He was perfect with a young up and coming manager. But no, we let Houllier go and bring in Alex McTosser and now we are in an even bigger mess!!
I agree although I don’t think I’d be looking at one of those dinosaurs. That ashworth guy has done a brilliant job at the baggies, and is now off to the fa to hopefully do more goodwork. We should be scouring for a guy to sit with Lerner and to oversee recruitment and ensuring our squad is developed with a good ethos. I have doubts about lambert tactically, but to be fair, he hasn’t got much to work with. But if we had someone at the club that can bring continuity regardless of managers (first team coaches) coming or going. Look how Hogdson left and it never troubled the baggies. Chris hughton and quite a few talented coaches have worked successfully in this sort of set up, rather than the archaic oneill emperor style, where the manager calls all the shots.
If lambert doesn’t like it, show him the door (it’s not like he’s gonna have clubs knocking his door down) and find someone who will. Even ferguson admits he leaves more and more tasks to specific specialised staff he trusts to do a good job so he can concentrate on the first team. Making him more of an overseer these days.
