Swansea 2-2 Aston Villa: A game of two halves

How on earth did we manage to nick a point from that game?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m well chuffed, because if you’d offered me a point before the game I’d have snatched your hand off.

I think very few of us thought we’d get anything out of this and it looked like the majority view was going to prove correct straight from the off.

Then we conceded the inevitable early goal.

Let’s get this clear.

In my forty odd years of watching the Villa, I don’t ever remember such a poor defensive performance as I witnessed today in that first half. We lacked shape, discipline, confidence, you name it.

It was only by the grace of god that we weren’t four-nil down after about twenty five minutes, but somehow we hung in there and I was thinking to myself we really needed a goal to give us a bit of a confidence boost.

Fortunately we got it, after some good work by Benteke and good finishing by Weimann. Why some people don’t seem to rate the latter surprises me, but whatever, the two front runners were a real plus point for me today.

They worked their socks off and Benteke was so aggressive, it’s frightening. If I was a Premier league defender, I think I’d be terrified at the prospect of playing against him.

Back to the goal.

As soon as we scored, it seemed to me like it was a massive weight off the player’s shoulders.

And then we came out as a different team in the second half. You could see the confidence rising as the game wore on and half way through, I was actually beginning to think we could nick the game.

And we so nearly did, after what for me, was a blatant penalty, which Benteke put away very nicely. It was good to see that his confidence doesn’t seem to have dropped, the way he took the ball and made it obvious he was going to take the shot.

Anyway, it wasn’t to last. How galling was it to concede in the last minute? I can honestly say I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach.

How valuable, confidence-wise, would an away win have been if we could have got it?

Never mind though, because although I’ve no doubt the lads will be as gutted as us fans, they have to take heart in the way they came back against the odds. It demonstrates to me that they do have the balls and they’re definitely up for the fight.

Which to me, is what makes this an absolutely cracking result.

I’m still struggling to dismiss how poor that first half was though.

  1. Awful first half and rode our luck but how the fuck can we not hang onto a lead with 60 secs on the clock FFS I WOULD HAVE TOOK A POINT B4 kick off but this feels like a defeat

  2. The first half was truly embarrassing, I’ve never seen a defence cut open so easily. Swansea had so many clear cut chances they should have had a 4 or 5 goal lead at half time. Second half we improved without really creating much and just when you think we’ve nicked it, in typical villa fashion we throw it away.
Sure its a decent point but when you have an opportunity like that to win, you cannot let it slip. I fear we could look back on todays game as the missed points that could have kept us up come the end of the season.

  3. A good point and one that few would expected as you said.

It’s always gutting to concede late goals but hopefully avoiding defeat at a tough ground will lift younger player’s heads.

  4. Fucking moaners are here again. FFS lets have some positivity! Good point… Nothing wrong with being lucky…it makes a pleasant change.
Wigan lost, Reading lost, Saints will lose, QPR will get stuffed tomorrow. The scum lost! Wembley final beckoning. Beat Saints and we will be ok….we will NOT be relegated.
Happy new year…. Great day alround… Stop the fucking negativity!

  5. The fact we stayed 1-1 at half time is amazing.Michu came close a couple of times at our place if I rem rightly missed a sitter at VP.So to weather the storm is the norm at the mo.Shame we didn’t take 3 points.Lambert needs to up his game good point but could of been another battering.Sort it Lambert.

  6. Can not defend, Lambert has no way of being able to organise a defence.

Remeber despite the injuries etc. we should not be cut open like we were.

A very welcome point but when you have score three to win, you are going to battling relegation.

Westwood’s serious injury is a big big blow and will force our hands for sure in the market.

    key 4 weeks now

and as for my contributions, they will not be around for a while now, win, lose or draw, to make it clear for the had of thinking.

    • Lucky to have still been in it.

      • totally from reports anyway as never watched the game. It does wind me up to see Villa fans celebrate a draw against the likes of Swansea … with no disrespect to them it shows how far we have fallen.

        • Ian remind me how many teams have left Swansea with all 3 points…we nearly did, albeit with a bit of luck and poor finishing…. But poor finishing by Swansea is hardly our problem is it?

        • WHat do you mean, the likes of Swansea.they are a club far better run than villa,in fact you lot are totally living in the past,i hope you go down saying remarks like that ,by the way your team performance today was the worst i have seen from an away team this season, should have been 4 down after 20 mins, admit it you were just lucky today, you will need more than luck to stay up

        • Do you mean like Liverpool Ian?

      • JD…theres nothing wrong with being lucky mate. And BTW if we would have missed them chances all hell would have broke loose… Enjoy the luck as we dont get too much of it!

  7. Lambert OUT!

    • and who exactly in?

Who would want the job after the way we have treated recent managers. We could not even persuade the managers of Wigan or the mighty Molde to join us in the summer.

Lambert is what we have got and we are lucky to have him. Give him a chance ffs.

Let’s hope he can pick up a few more decent players this transfer window.

      • Treated recent managers?..massive payoffs for fucking up the job,how do they survive..lamberts created the WORST villa side ive seen in 42 years..i dont want him.

        • Soooooo who will want the job?

Also on the treating previous managers topic – I would like to point out that McLeish was pretty close to a meltdown after the Bolton game last season after the personal attack on him and his familiy. Money is not everything and the payoff to McLeish could actually be reduced now he is back in employment at forest. That is generally how manager severance payoffs work.

I agree the team has been shit the past few games but what can we do? I left the game at 65 minutes on Saturday as well to get down the adventurers as I had enough of the shit, but the team is work in progress.

I am still convinced Lambert is the best we can get. Lerner on the other hand has some questions to answer

    • I’m with you GarethVilla. He needs to go, looks completely lost on the touchline. Even when we get the luck his lower league no hopers mess it up in the last minute. Disgraceful

  8. Your right, the first half was terrible.our defence has to be replaced..thank god for benteke

  9. I was sitting within 20 yards of where the penalty was given and thought it was a dive. Will look at MotD tonight with interest. I also had a good line of sight on the Villa handball at the other end and it seemed clearly inside the area. A tale of two penalties perhaps? Credit to Villa for coming back into things in the second half but they should have been dead and buried, given the chances the Swans missed.. Villa looked a poor side and face a long hard season..

    • Fair play to Swansea being 8th in the table tonight, and the table never lies, but we have taken 4 points of your lot, so we must be your bogey side!

Shame that if you finish high enough in the table (or win a cup) you cannot get into Europe being a Welsh side!

    • The handball was also a definite pen too, imo.
I was trying to concentrate on the positive side (for us), which is why I never mentioned it Dai.

  10. can anyone give me some more info on the Westwood situation, please?

  11. Humiliated in the first half for the fourth game running and a combination of bad luck and sloppy finishing by Swansea let us off.
We won’t survive this season thats for sure. We need to cut our losses and get lam-berk out now and then turn our attention to turfing out that clueless twat lerner. A lucky point at Swansea makes little difference in the grand scheme of things, games are slowly running out and we can’t seem to string together one win let alone the unbeaten run we need to stay up. The club remains a shambles!

  12. I swear some of you lot watch a different match to me, and it seems many are breathing a sigh of relief that we conceded a late equaliser.

Just sickening this site at times.

We didn’t start well, but we have a midfielder at centre half, and another new full back.

Second half, Benteke and Weimann looked sharp, and they look like they have goals in them.

It wasn’t a dive from Weimann for the miserable Welsh prat, I thought Dyer handballed it just before he went through him anyway.

Thank God the BBC write a more accurate report than some of you lot that don’t even watch the game.

As for being the poorest away side that the Swans have seen, I saw their game against the Hammers on Sky and it could have been a cricket score, how does that compare to a side that you’ve lost to, and scored a last gasp injury time point saver against ?

  13. I have thought of a New Year money making scheme.

All those stating that we are down for sure, let me know how much you want to wager on that statement, and I will match your stake.

The side that we have won’t go down.

  14. Well said Vaze… Great to have some positivity on here…. It really is unbelievable. Some of the negative peeps on here appear to be moaning that Swansea missed so many chanches… Me I’m delighted!

  15. The vitriol that purported Villa fans have for our club is quite shocking at times.

They don’t seem to understand that if you spend all the money that you have and plenty more besides, you have to pay it off and save up before spending again.

    Clueless.

  16. Cracking show of spirit from the lads. Would’ve been so easy to crumble again but they kept fighting and got their reward!
