Friend signs for Boro, is it now Bennett for Villa, no Cresswell

Interesting news today from Middlesbrough.

Remember I posted earlier this week that George Friend a left back was headed towards Ipswich to replace we thought Aaron Cresswell. Well in fact he is going to Middlesbrough now, does this mean our deal is off for Cresswell as they seem to be asking far too much money, a reported £6M.

However by Friend going to Middlesbrough are they replacing their left back there. Remember about two weeks ago we were linked with the young and up and coming Left Back Joe Bennett ?

Boro have spend £500K on Friend, that is a lot of cash for them and I do not believe it is so that Friend can be the reserve Left Back. Bennett is highly rated by many teams and many have enquired. It does not mean automatically that Bennett will be villa bound. However I checked for any rumours and a couple for Sunderland and Man City however remember it was Radio WM who linked us to him from NE sources.

This may have some legs.

EDIT – The local journalist I mentioned before Stuart Watson has confirmed no more contact from Villa about Cresswell.

1. Think we should sign John Guidetti, link back up with KAE and Vlaar!

2. Think we should sign John Guidetti, link back up with KAE and Vlaar!, Bent/Guidetti would be a lethal partnership, I heard that arthur numan was scouting him, so possibility that we could get him.

3. your english is terrible

4. George Friend is a centre back and a stand in left back!

5. et…. It’s called grammer, not english and no one other than you actually gives a flying ****. Do one.
I’d still prefer Cresswell providing we get him under 4mil

6. Maynor Figueroa (Left Back – Wigan Athletic) would be my choice especialy when Ipswich asking 6m for cresswell better value out there

7. you should care because it’s an eye sore to read. you have to read it 5 times to understand what he’s trying to say. some of it doesn’t even make sense. so it’s english, not grammar.

8. i never view this! just came up on my twitter feed as i follow villa updates and i couldn’t understand what it meant! you’d have a lot more readers if you wrote without making peoples heads hurt!

9. Well stick to your tweets !

10. What a bunch of sad men. Villa are preparing for what could be one of our most exciting seasons in years and all you want to discuss is grammar! Save it for school please and lets focus on football….

11. bunch of wankers…
is this a villa page or a bitch page?
get a life knobheads

12. Yeah, et, if you don’t like it, stick to your tweets.

Otherwise, welcome to what can be the best Villa site for getting the news first; or the biggest load of bollocks you can find.
Cutting edge generally works that way and whatever, grammar doesn’t matter.
You’ll find it’s the content that counts :-)

13. Bent the captain for next season.

• I think Bent for captain is a great call, this guy scores goals, give him the status of captain, and provide his supply line and we can think about top 7 this time around, oh, and Ian, this blog is good stuff mate, top man.

• when he says
“If I can hang on to it, I’ll be delighted, and that’s a big goal of mine. The gaffer just said to me ‘I’ve given you the armband for now, and I just want you to justify why I’ve given it to you’.
I suspect it is the fact no one else available, I suspect the proper captain will be vlaar and clear for all to see.

• May well be the case Ian, but a confident striker is a quality striker, and perhaps Lambert is giving him the shot in the arm that really works…..Vlaar as captain straight away.? I’m not so sure.

• I’m not convinced on him being the right one as Cap, but yes, I agree with your thinking.
Make him feel important, base the game around him and supply the ammo.

Then there is no excuse.
Except maybe an excuse to get rid of him, if he doesn’t perform???

Hopefully not.

It’s just the cynic in me coming out again :-)

• It is fine being a cynic and if it works out great. Basing a team around one player is so risky though for reasons we know.Firstly IMHO he needs wingers anot the narrow formations we have seen so far

• Agreed on the wingers, that’s where Nzog and Albrighton etc (new winger?) come in.
And what happens if Bent gets injured (which he will)?

I’m not saying I agree.
It’s more that I can understand why PL has given it to Bent.
It seems to me that if you want Bent to perform, you are best off bigging him up, as much as possible.
But by the same token, you’re also making him the fall guy.
Which may well be convenient, if Bent as a lone striker doesn’t fit into PL’s plans, long term.

• but Bent as the lone striker for me does not work …..

that I think has always been the problem with Bent and why he has never made it to an higher level and not likely to

• Exactly my point Ian.

PL seems to have his finger on the pulse, in that most of us don’t want Bent gone.
So maybe you give him his head, play him up on his own and see how he goes?

Shit or bust, so to speak?

And then get rid, if it doesn’t happen?

Not what I want, but something I can see PL the tactician looking at.

What I’m saying is I don’t think PL likes top players (it’s also another reason I don’t see us signing one) that are a supposed notch above.
It just doesn’t suit his ethics.

Or of course, I could be talking utter tripe :-)

• Anon, as usual you make complete sense, but the guy is capable and proven in his position, which set’s him apart from many others in the squad, Given being an exception, I just thought that Gabby being made captain last year was a political decision, and in truth a call that served only to attempt to benefit a manager that was floundering and a player that held some “aces” within the dressing room and the fan base. In all honesty, I’d love to see Clark put in as permanent CH and with the armband, but that maybe two seasons too early..

• Sasa,

Agreed re Gabby.
He must have at least some respect in the dressing room, but he just doesn’t strike me as captain material.
Political is probably a good word.

Given, nah, he can’t command his box, let alone the team, imo, although he too, must be respected in the dressing room.

I’ve said already, it has to be Dunne for me, but that’s not ideal, given that he’s marmite with the fans and in the last year of his contract, with no hope of a renewal.

Vlaar is sounding like the one, when Bent get’s injured.

Stan is still the club captain for me though.
Love the bloke

• I find it really hard to disagree with you, but with Stan, and I am so sorry about his plight, and I hope above hope that he pull’s through, but I don’t see him as captain every week, club captain “yes”, but on the field we need some real drive, I have been openly critical of Petrov as a player, but please accept that I totally split that away from what he and his family battle at present.
All the best.

• Totally agree Sasa,
It’s why I said club captain.
What would probably be a good solution is for him to be made a club ambassador, along with Tayls

14. i Agree grama iz inportent soyoo kan understand wat i iz saying ifink yoo shud allgobak too skool thik bastads.

15. I haven’t seen much of Holman, haven’t seen anything from our pre-season games. Does he look like a starter? Or do we really need another pacey winger? Would love to see either Sinclair, Ince or Phillips in. We need more excitement and creativity since the departures of Young and Downing (can’t even write his name without feeling physically sick) we lack direction in our counter attacks.

16. I really dont understand why Lambert isnt looking at Royston Drenthe. Hes a free agent, hes young, he can set up and score goals, and most importantly hes a player that has always played in the sort of footballing system that Lambert is trying to instill at Villa. After previously being at Feyenoord, Real Madrid and the Netherlands, hes used to playing passing football, and hes ready-made to slot into our style perfectly.

• interesting call but in the year at everton did he really shine ??

• I thought he looked quality at Everton. Always so dangerous going forward. 4 goals and 8 assists in a season…. not bad at all.

• Here’s a shout Ian for a winger why not seb laurrsen in part exchange for Collins? Assuming Collins went to sunderland and laurrsen and Sunderland agreed. A long shot I know but realistic and he can deliver a great cross.

• nah … not because he is ex blues but not forward looking enough for me.

Matt Phillips all the way, surely we have the cash for him ?

IF Lambert wants him of course !!

• Fair enuf. But what if we don’t get Phillips? I don’t care if he’s ex blue nose either. Think he’s a decent player and wouldn’t break the bank.

• I’m with you oohahpaulmcgrath. Larsson is a great call for wide right. Big, big improvement on the likes of Marc Albrighton.

Would have liked him last summer before he moved to the north east, but definitely even more so now. He’d be a very good addition.

• I prefer wide players with pace and the ability to beat the full back.

No doubting he has quality delivery and good from set pieces though.

• And wants a fortune in wages.
From what I’ve seen, he has too much trap too.
I can’t see it happening.

17. http://www.wkyc.com/rss/article/254138/45/Randy-Lerners-other-sports-team- Can you believe these American idiots? ‘Suburban London’
‘Aston Villa is an English soccer team that Lerner purchased in 2006. The team has had no major wins over the past seven years, but has a rich history in suburban London.’

• Lol! Suppose if you live in a country that size, Brum might seem like a London suburb; it’s the only excuse I can think up on behalf of whoever wrote this!

18. Sturridge,Phillips and Ince…….Please !

• I’m with you in the Matt Phillips fan club, Ted, and have been for a while. He looks really useful to me, and will only get better in the next couple of years, I’m sure. Would love to see us land him, but there doesn’t seem to have been any sort of hint that we might be interested, at least that I’ve seen, anyway.
