I guess what happened today was typical of all teams at times but it seems to happen a lot to us (well that is my perception !!).
So lets go back in history and remember some of the best in my time at supporting the club. Many games of course been 2-0 up and blew it but it is the way you do it that counts. So my top three for you
Aston Villa 2 – Stoke City 2 – 1st March 2009
OK we know the background to this game. We gave up the UEFA cup in order to qualify for the Champions league and at 2-0 up it appeared all good and we were going to be what, 9 points clear of Arsenal. However when Greg Whelan cracked in a 25 last few minutes long ranger it seemed to suck the life out of the team. We failed to win another game for two months and it could be identified that MON lost a lot of good will with that move.
You could argue that game cost us a min £40M and our crack at the CL and I have no doubt if we had got it, history may have been much better for all involved.
Aston Villa 4 – Leicester City 4 – 22nd Feb 1995
Great throwaways are also judged by the impact of it, the gap and the actual situation. For this game we were 4-1 up and coasting Brian Little had been in charge for a few games and we had just come off the back of the 7-1 win against Wimbledon and from a relegation place were looking very good for a UEFA cup spot (when it used to mean something). Then bang, bang, bang we lost the lead and nearly got relegated finishing in 18th whilst Leicester went down. I remember that game because I bust my little finger trying to punch one of the exit gates !!
Aston Villa 3 Norwich City 3 – 28th April 1990
Here is a video of it
At 3-1 up with a rare Cascarino goal (he cost us the league IMHO) then hopes of a league title were still alive, I remeber being in the Holte and it was a part atmosphere singing ‘we gonna win the league’ . However Norwich of course were really good that season and made sure with two goals we did not win it. It did seem then we were on a cusp of something great but we were never going to keep Graham Taylor.
As I type these out, the memories came flooding back, do you have some ?
Aston Villa News 24/7
Stay at home slag off the team, typical tory
2 0 up against man u then van tit comes on lose 3 2 2 0 up against chelski then ref gives stupid pen down to ten men draw 4 4
Yeah they lot of painful reminders ian think what might hav been if villa didnt throw games away and last min goals
hence I picked those as the three biggest impacts, don;t forget Spurs 4-4 as well but the biggest impacts of the failures were the three I added
strange thing is that all three are from the best managers of that decade, the thing ois wtih those throwaways no one expected it.
take the stoke one, remeber the atmosphere after carew’s goal, who would have thought they could come back
Wot about 4.1 up v spurs they came bk to 4.4. Ffs
just realised my post was about this game!
Blues 2-0 up at villa park was bad
That was unforgivable we should of been 5.0 up thou before they got their first. Missed chances cost us.
Fuck me just watched norwich video dunne would of been proud of mountfields own goal lol
We’re 2.0 up at half time some years ago and Merson scored. Still lost 3.2 sound familiar.
1 nil down against Tottenham at The Lane, then went 4-1 up. They came back and drew 4-4, celebrated every goal with their manager. Then the manager got sacked. Good old Martin Jol, great man manager, players loved playing for him. Date….. some time in the last 5 years.
I remember that as a Bluenose served me in a chippy in Erdington, I remember laughing and asking for him to not spit in my chips. He told me I was alrite for supporting local, its the Liverpool and ManU fans he couldn’t stand!
How about man u FA cup when we were 2-0 up and van nistlerooy destroyed us for 3-2. Or man u last season, 2-0 up to 2-2 in the last 10!
1st of march was my 18th birthday, 2 up and i thought we was destined for all 3pts and champions league but i spoke to soon would of been a great birthday pressie, same old same old :/
Beating Inter at Villa Park in 1990 is one of the matches I will always remember. Kent Nielsen, La La La and David Platt’s cool finish from a great ball by Sid. The second leg, well, the less said about that the better. ’94 and the penalties made up for it somewhat but I was so gutted we capitulated so weakly at the San Siro.
Klinsman and a few referee decisions were the cause in 90
