The commercialisation of football is an issue I’ve seen raised on this blog a lot, and it’s something that all football fans have an opinion on; the broadcasting of games, the economic disparity in the league and the disillusionment of fans due to the lack of competitiveness between ‘elite’ teams and the rest of us.
I’m 21, a Villa fan all my life and a season ticket holder for the past 10 years. I love the club, and the alarming drop in attendances points towards several factors. This isn’t just an issue which affects Aston Villa though, and the strength of what some people call the ‘sky four’ and now the ‘sky six’ has changed our league, for better or worse.
My dissertation is on the media’s role in the commercialisation of sport. As part of my research I’m doing a questionnaire into people’s viewing habits to see how the media and commercialisation affects attendances. There are of course a wide range of factors (performance, cost, etc.), and the survey, and dissertation as a whole, is going to look into these.
The questionnaire is going to look at this from the fans perspective. I’d really appreciate it if you could take part and complete the survey. It’s all confidential and anonymous, and the answers are only going to be used for academic purposes. There are around 25 questions, and takes less than 5 minutes. I know it’s something we call all be passionate about so I’d be really grateful if you could take the time to participate.
