Sean on VT posted a thread about a new banner at VP which seemed to get the backing of everyone and here he has provided some details on it.

“A very nice banner” General Krulak on VillaTalk
“Love it!! Honoured!! #utv” Ian Taylor on Twitter
The idea behind the banner was to create something close to the “Proud History – Bright Future” slogan that has come into being since Randy Lerner took over the club. Roughly, the banner goes from past to present from left to right to represent the slogan, with the latest local hero, Gabby, as a current player who has already made a massive contribution (his winner at Old Trafford will stick with all of us for years) on the far right. I thought it was important to have a player who A. is currently playing for us and B. seems unlikely to leave the club (certainly based on what Gabby has said and his eagerness to sign long-term contracts).
The main focus is of our finest hour in Rotterdam in 1982, when we lifted the European Cup, so many of those players are honoured. There are other heroes on there, too; Paul ‘God’ McGrath, widely regarded as our finest ever player, for example. Andy Townsend was the last player to captain us to Wembley success, Brian Little is regarded as one of our most skilful ever players and, in recent times, Martin Laursen and Olof Mellberg have become heroes to us all.
My vision is to hopefully see this banner draped across the famous Trinity Road Stand one day, hopefully to inspire fans and players alike when they turn to face it before kick off.”

Gabby doesnt deserve to be anywhere near those players.
No way.
Thank you to those of you who have left kind and constructive replies.
To those who don’t see the point, I’m just somebody who enjoys this sort of thing and I’m somebody who would love to be able to contribute something positive to Villa Park. From the way you talk about the club you apparently love, I can see how you wouldn’t understand this.
Denny, fair enough – Gabby was the most contentious one I included based on feedback from VT. As I said, though, I thought it was important to include a present player, so it’s not purely reliant on the past. Also, I think Gabby has done enough; winners away at SHA, Man U and what for me was the most important goal of last season with our winner against West Ham – he scores important goals and has, I think, already left a mark on the club.
Thanks again all, UTV!
Great banner matey, would love to see Yorkie on there, and possibly someone like platty or staunton, if Milner was still here id suggest him too
I get where ur coming from Sean mate but not many Villa Fans are of that mind atm. U have to understand how distraught we are right now. We’ve just witnessed the sale of 2 more of our best players again this summer yet Lerner seems willing to drag his feet in spending any of the money so far. We knew Ash Young was leaving from the end of the season but Downing was supposed to be staying til next summer at least. In my humble but right opinion Lerner is selling us down the road. He continues to drag us further into the mire by selling our best players yr on yr. How are we supposed to feel like the future is bright when we see these sort of things happening with such regularity atg Villa Pk??
I’m angry my friend but it’s not at other fans. I’m angry at how Lerner, Faulkner and his other cronie Krulak have treated us over the last 2yrs or more. We’ve lost Barry, Milner, Young and Downing in the last 3yrs. Any club would be hard pressed to replace players of that quality imo but Lerner seems happy to let them walk without a fight. He was supposed to be our saviour but he’s turning out to be the man who’s gonna send us into freefall if we’re not careful. I don’t care what anyone thinks of me for saying this about Lerner because He’s doing the exact same thing Ellis did. Giving us faulse hope and as soon as we begin to reach the heights of the Top4 he pulls the rug out from under us?
Lerner has got it majorly wrong on this and it’s costing us dearly with our best players running for the hills before it’s 2 late for them to win trophies. It’s a sad state of affairs when someone like Krulak can say he knows better than any Villa fan. I’m so irate at the twat that is KRULAK for his statements on the sale of players or on the Alex McLeish signing. I know in my heart and soul that Lerner and hios cronies tapped up McLeish b4 he left Brum. I also know for definite that Lerner used the McClaren thing to push ahead with McLeish’s signing as our next manager. Lerner has been playing us for SAPS for a few yrs now and I’m sick and tired of it at this stage.
I know I’m right on how Lerner is doing business at Villa Pk. He has no intention of keeping Darren Bent at Villa Pk any longer than this season either. I’m willing to bet anything on the sale of DB next summer. He onlyu sanctioned the buying Darren Bent because he knew we’d have killed him if we’d got relegated. We came that close this season my friend. Lerner knew how close we came and that’s the only reason he allowed Gerard Houllier to bring in DB. He wouldn’t sanction anything near a 20odd million bid while Martin O’Neill was in charge, would he? No he wouldn’t and that says it all about the twat!!! I’ve had enuf of RANDY LERNER at Villa Pk. I want him out! I don’t care what anyone thinks of me for saying it either. He’s managed to drag us into the shit all by his lonesome. He cannot blame MON for this mess. He’s allowed this mess to come about at our club. He allowed MON to spend money on players to warm our bench and did or said nothing until it was too late. Then MON walks and we have been in the mire since. All LERNER’S fault. Any fan who thinks otherwise is living on cloud cuckoo land..Lerner has made a complete mess ofd our club in the last 3yrs. He should be ashamed of his conduct and that of his closest allies within the club also…
I’ve ranted enuf for now mate..Sorry for the ranting and raving but this is what LERNER has done to me. I’m 41 and I’ve seen goos times, Great times and now we have to stomach some of the worst times in my time as a supporter. It’s heartbreaking that I have to listen to some dumbass Yank KRULAK tell me he knows more about our club than any of us fans. I hate that bastard!!! FUCK OFF KRULAK U TWAT!!!!
fantastic banner sean great to see my hero BRIAN LITTLE on it well done UP THE BLOODY VILLA
Cheers, my Dad would not have been happy if I’d left Brian Little out! UTV!
youre Dad has class sean UP THE BLOODY VILLA.
Great banner but Villa also had a very proud history prior to the 1980s so it would be good to get some older stars, including founding players on there as well. McParland, Aitken, Waring, the list could go on and on. I know you can only have so many but perhaps a selection from across all eras would make a great banner already better…and yes…Brian Little was the best of the best!
Great Banner. But I also would be happy to see some legends from our past. Pongo, Charlie Aitken, Gerry Hitchens etc etc. If possible.
Nice to see some positivity, it’s as nostalgic for me to look back on some of the old shirts as it is the old players.
As for Gabby, I believe that he fully deserves to be included on the banner as our current player.
Local lad made good. Hope he has another good season ahead.
Dont listen to the negative feedback, great banner which should be embraced by the club.
Totally can’t understand why anyone would give negative feedback on this. Great banner and good to have something positive for a change. Have you had any feedback from the club on actually getting it made?
Fantastic banner.
Shame a poster can play football, if only the images could come to life.
May be LERNER believes the images are in fact real and our new signings?
PITTY ITS A PR STUNT, PATHETIC ATTEMPT BY LERNER TO DEFLECT ATTENTION.
At last the general speaks, no real surprise there then, PATHETIC.
Why doesn.t the general come out and explain the PR disaster thats our club ad how LERNER is selling of our assets.
LERNER OUT
You sir are an idiot
Lerner has no idea about this to the best of my knowledge. It’s just something I want to do to leave my mark at Villa Park.
Thanks to most people so far for the great feedback! Haven’t heard anything from the club as of yet, but I’m hopeful now it’s getting more exposure. I’d be able to get it printed through work, all the club need to do is approve it and then sort out the logistics of getting it hung up.
I can’t quite recognise the 1st,3rd and 5th players. My guesses are Spink, Gray and Morley. Correct me if i’m wrong please
Spink, Morley and Cowans. Guess the last two need a bit more work!
Great banner, good to see Gabby on there. I agree with our friend however that Villa’s history goes back much further than 1981-82. In fact our history goes back into the mists of time; how about a mention of William Mcgregor, Villa director and one of founders of the first football league in the world and what about our first captain to lift the League Trophy Archie Hunter.
Still a great banner and I am not trying to be negative but I am proud that we were around along time before Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool and Newton Heath were even thought about.
P Hughes.
And don’t forget Mr Merson.
P Hughes.
Why isnt Lee Hendrie or Hassan Kachloul on it, both LEGENDS. Sorry I mean WANKERS
I’d love to see a banner at Villa Park with a photo of the pre-War Villa team in Berlin refusing to do the Nazi salute.
I think we could have a quite a few photo banners like this around the ground, each with the famous “Prepared” motto underneath, the idea being that there are many ways Villans have shown themselves to be “Prepared” over the years.
I love this idea. Is there a photo of that Villa side refusing to salute? I’ve only ever read about it, but never seen a photo. If so, I’d knock something up
What about Henrik Larsson and Jimmy Johnstone. Both legends.
Jesus man you been in a comma?
