Fee agreed for Carlos – Big Mistake, no bid for Parker

SSN just announced a fee has been agreed between Rangers and Villa for Carlos Cuellar.

The fee is reckoned to be a bargain £2m and Carlos thought to be close to agreeing personal terms with Rangers and Ally McCoist has confirmed the fee has been agreed. Unlike the likes of Beye, Dunne and Warnock who all caused problems for the club and disgraced themselves and the club Carlos has been a model pro who we should have kept.

However the key to all this is wages and on a reported £40k a week and nearly 30 I guess a younger and cheaper (wages) Central defender has been identified but no links have been reported for one. Clearly any decent team needs 4 Centre Backs and you would really hope we have not selling Cuellar with no one lined up ?

This is not even mentioning what I think is his great play and the record when he played in defence says it all for me. I don’t remember a single game where Carlos let himself down unlike some and he has always been great for the club and fans, Rangers fans will treat him like a returning hero, quality player for them and total bargain.

Cuellar is on twitter at @cuellar24 so send him a message if you are on it and thanks Carlos for showing us what a true professional in this nasty game really is.

EDIT

Mat Kendrick, just tweeted

No truth in reports of an #avfc bid for Scott Parker, apparently. Villa monitoring him, but have other priorities first

  1. Imo this is good business, Carlos is loved by a section of the fans but the truth is he’s an average defender, doesn’t pass the ball well at all and his pace is lacking, also doesn’t he only have a year left on his contract? so i can totally understand why we’re selling now, plus the other day he was gushing over the prospect of returning to Ibrox so i’m happy for him to go back “home”.

And fools are asking why we haven’t sold Beye instead but the fact is NO-ONE HAS MADE A BID FOR HIM YET, once someone does i’m hopeful he’ll be out the door too, the more we remove the deadwood the better, the likes of Ireland and Warnock are good enough to be in the squad so i can understand why Eck is giving them another chance, i also think Heskey needs to be shown the door too so Eck can really start to build his own squad with the funds he’s got.

    • Agreed that Carlos is nothing special but still prefer him to that useless lump Dunne who we are stuck with for another season !!

  2. Really like Cuellar and don’t understand why he hasn’t been given more of a chance, but the four CD, Dunne, Collins, Clarke and Baker.

  3. Randy learner and his board must GO before we have no club to support ,he is the same as Ellis was,we need to buy and keep carlos and get dunne transfered out

    • Come off it, I am far from happy with Downing, Young & running down of the team (in the name if wages), and I really can’t believe AM been hired wv his skill being premier league relegation and ugly direct 70′s football. But you can’t compare RL to Ellis, AM may be uninspiring, but Ellis bought in Jozef Venglo and we would not have seen Bent here last season under Ellis.

Look on the bright side at least AM should be able to improve on our last Scottish managers 21% win ratio ;)

  4. People seem to be saying the same things get rid of Dunne get rid of Beye get rid this one and get rid of that one, the fact is if there are still in contract then we can’t just get rid of them, someone has to bid and wont to buy them.

  5. cuellar is slow his passing is awful and average in the air at best, i cant understand why people are upset about his departure. Dunne had a terrible season overall but is a better all round player than carlos, but i agree with your point about lack of cover at the centre of defence this has to be sorted as this our weakest area

  6. Why are people whining? Lets face it, while Cuellar was probably our best all around defender, he didn’t play. If McLeish didn’t want to play him, he’s allowing a player that won’t play leave, to free up wages and even a little cash. Something that a certain other manager refused to do. (No surprise he’s gone from great to an awful player in the matter of a couple days).

  7. does anyone else think we should bid 4 gary cahill, i know he will be about 20mil but we do have the money

    • Would like to see Cahill back, but no way do Villa have £20m to spend on a single defender, and he’s waiting for a call from Arsenal or another of the ‘rich six’…

  8. id get rid of gabby aswell.simply not a prem player

  9. Nice bloke and never caused a problem. But lets face it he is an SPL defender, never good enough and was a shit signing at 7.8m

    • Agree insofar as I couldn’t ever work out how MON thought he was worth nearly £8m, FFS?

To give the player some credit though, he’s been a good pro and did what he was asked to do, even when played out of position.

  10. While it would be unrealistic to expect the club to recoup their full outlay for this transfer, I’d have thought we’d have got a better deal than this.

Carlos Cuellar is a solid pro and a decent player.

    • Nothing against Carlos at all: wish he’d been picked more often last season. But we MON over-paid for him by a large amount, and we’re selling him for much closer to his real value.
