The possible next VILLA manager has resigned

OK, so these are just rumours but we know at least one manager is out of work.

Hattip – H&V

Quique Sanchez Flores who was heavily linked a few days back has resigned today from Athletico Madrid

A very highly rated young coach, disappointing season but at Athletico never easy !!

Would be quite a leap into the unknown but an ‘exotic’ manager some crave.

  1. Don’t bother us with this crap just let us know the minute Moyes resigns.

  2. na dont want him.

    moyes, rafa or jol.

but houllier will be our manager

  3. Jol? Jeez. No thanks.

    I’d definitely take Rafa, though.

  4. I will put £50 on any takers that GH will be our manager next year.

  5. Please not Rafa I could’nt stand another rant against SAF. Moyes for me or Hiddink still think we’ll still have GH

  6. Lets get one thing clear about Moyes. In his second full season he finished 17th with 39 points which as we can all see is worse than our current position. He survived at Everton – would he have survived at Villa after finishing 17th with 39 points?

And as for doing it all on the cheap; he’s payed 6m for Beattie, 7m for Heitinga, 15m for Fellaini, 11m for Yakubu,9m for Andy Johnson,5m for Per Kroldrup, 4m for Simon Davies and lots of players for “undisclosed fees”.

I’m not saying he’s a bad manager, in fact if Houllier should leave I would consider Moyes to be in the top 3 of possible replacements, but if supporters don’t give him more latitude than they’ve given Houllier the he might not last a season.

Realistically the Villa are now a 6th to 12th team with the difference between 6th and 12th not being about investment but about holding on to leads and grinding out results in adversity. A Manager like Moyes (being an ex-defender) is the type who could organise a team to hold on to leads and grind out results but if he should join the Villa – be realistic and expect nothing better than 6th.

As for Managers like Flores – I remember the excitement when Venglos joined the Villa (we all know he didn’t live up to expectation) – why would we expect him to do well with the defenders we currently have and if the answer is “he would replace them” then why not give Houllier a chance to do the same?

  7. Oh Dear.. Flores would be an awful appointment for the Villa! Thats worse than keeping GH :D

I would luv to see Hidink take the lead.

    UTV!

    • Can we PLEASE stop naming Hiddink and Villas-Boas as managers we want Villa to hire. They are never, ever, EVER going to manage us. So do yourself a favor a stop hoping for it.

  8. The idea that RL would go for a manager with no experience of English football seems far-fetched to me.

Anyway, whoever’s in the hot seat at VP next season wil have an unpleasant time unless we win four or five out of the first ten games; we’ve seen this season how quickly some fans can turn extremely nasty when things aren’t going well. Makes it such a desirable post….

    • just depends how good their PR is, Houllier never stood a chance after the 7-12th comments, then the Liverpool fiasco

and the other problem was that many including myself obviously never wanted him

the next manager will have it easier I suspect IF Houllier has to go because of health.

      • If the last 6 months are any guide, we could appoint Jose, Pepe or Jesus Christ himself, and unless we were winning every game, a lot of ‘fans’ would be demanding another change in a matter of weeks..

Just shows why DOL really hit a nerve when he accused us being “F*****” – too close to the truth.

        • Ardent, you are right, I have been disgusted by the response of many “blogging” Villa fans this year, and under MON. We have some bad fans, I’m sorry to say. Wanting more for the club is one thing, slagging off the club and some of our finest like a bunch of little whinging girls is another. We need to man up

  9. I really don’t want to see some recycled or previously failed Premier League manager.

Martin Jol is a nice manager…but pass.

Moyes? Why? What has he done that makes anyone think he would lead us to glory?

Benitez? I mean…hes as good a choice as any of these recycled managers.

I wouldn’t mind seeing someone fresh. Flores, Rijkaard, someone who can add a new wrinkle to a team that really needs it. Not the same old chip and chase nonsense. That only works in ice hockey. Most of these managers we hear mentioned from the Premiership are chip and chase guys. No thanks.

They need someone who can teach attacking football with a responsible defensive setup.

    • In an ideal world, yes. Back in the real world I imagine RL would look for a ‘safe pair of hands’ rather than taking a gamble on something different – look at the response to Houllier since day 1.

  10. Get used to the idea.

  11. I’m in the minority who is really hoping GH stays on. Give him the chance to finish what he has started. Fair play to randy for accepting unlike most villa fans that success doesn’t come over night and good things come to those who wait. With a full pre season and his own players, we will be ten times better next year!!

    • Totally agree jonvilla too many GH haters are writing him off, I don’t think he’s finished yet and trust me when I say this Faulkner and Learner back this guy more than they ever did MON to get us where we want to be

      • I’ve no doubt that GH will stay IF his medics can assure the club that it’s OK to do so.
But that still seems like a big ‘IF’ at this stage.

        • I know but there so many daily discussions about who’s the next boss going to when nobody knows on what GH is going to do. Give the guy some respect before talking about his successor . How would ianrobo feel about people at work talking about somebody doing his job whilst he was still there (assuming that he works and doesn’t spend all day writing GH hate mail) just saying that all

          • grow up eh with your last comment.

as to your first it is valid but villa is far greater than one man, one owner, one manager

Speculation will ALWAYS happen and Houllier is not dead or dying and from we are told, recovering well.

for the long term well being of the club we have to know what will happen and quicker the better either way.

            • Waht does this mean Speculation will ALWAYS happen and Houllier is not dead or dying and from we are told, recovering well ?

Is he “recovering well” or is he “not …. recovering well”? And could you expand on the detail of this “recovery” or “not recovery” information. Thanks in advance.

            • Robo you are right speculation will always happen – but you start a lot of it. I’m not saying it would be a bad thing to discuss it – I’m sure RL and PF have already done this themselves – but every day there is a new article here discussing his replacement, albeit with a marginally different stance each time. I think by now we all know each others preferences so lets leave it be now and wait and see. And in the mean time talk about the remaining games and new kit – always enjoy the mock ups you source for this site

              • thanks for the comments about the mock ups but no more as it is clear what the kit will be. the image on JJB was a prototype but the real one is going to be very close.

As for the speculation over houllier only one person will stop that – Lerner by issuing a statement.

Is there anyone out there that believe after three weeks the club do not know the advice from the doctors ?

check all the other sites and blogs that are specific to villa, we are all discussing it.

          • Speculation is what happens when there’s a news vacuum.

By saying that everything is on ‘hold’ for another couple of weeks, the club have left most fans frustrated, and quite a few worried [GMac in charge while technically we're still not safe is hardly reassuring].

  13. moyes would just get us medicority we need foreign

  14. He resigned because he’s doing badly. He’s got Aguero and Forlan up front, spent 20 million on centre backs, a fantastic youth system, arguably the best keeper prospect in the world, and he can’t get them past 7th in the league.

He won the Europa League which is impressive, although Atletico did easily have the players to do it, and with respect to Fulham, they were huge favourites for the final. He didn’t win anything at Benfica anyway, which is pretty poor with the squad they had – and that was when Porto were in a slump too.

Not my first choice thats for sure. Remember Juande Ramos at spurs as well?

Rijkaard please. If not then Rafael Benitez (yes. 2 poor seasons, in an otherwise amazing management record.).

  15. wel be stuck with houlier again and gmac and rafa no thanks thats just as dagerous

    • here is a question

ignoring daft names like Jose, is there one manager out there who we could feasibly get that would unite a clearly split fan base.

I agree about rafa, he would cause just as many issues as Houllier.

      • Ian, this name won’t heal a split and divided fan base, and I’ll get slammed by many for this, maybe rightly so, but, taking into account that we want good football, how about Hoddle, now before people pass out and call me a complete idiot, he had England going in the right direction, he’s firm enough to make big shouts, and he might just have the desire to prove a point?
I’d take him over Big Sam every time….
If not, then Hodgson, I like Woy, he’s been at VP for the last couple of home games and with him at the helm I think we’d be more than ok.
To close, I still want GH, so there you go, I’m ready to be slated!

    • There is no manager that could unite us. And to be honest, I’ll be happy to never have anything in common with some on here.

They wear Villa colours and I wear Villa colours and that’s it.

I can’t pretend I suddenly want to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who constantly moan and whinge, and hurl abuse at anybody such as me who dares be positive about the club.

      UTV

  16. No thanks to rijkaard, hasn’t really done much apart from at barca and let’s be honest he was there when the likes of messi and so were coming into the team, most managers would do well with a team like Barcelona. I wouldn’t like benitez either. I’m surprised the bob Bradley links haven’t re appeared.

  17. Who is Dortmund’s manager? He won the Bundesliga with no budget. Now all the big clubs are going to pick his team apart at the transfer window. So why not bring him over here.

  18. [...] The possible next VILLA manager has resigned OK, so these are just rumours but we know at least one manager is out of work. [...] [...]

  19. ANCELOTTI Please!
hopefully Ambramovich will be daft enough to let him go. He has said he wants to stay in the premier league next season. Surely we are his most likely destination? We’re as big a premier league club as he can get i reckon.
