Speculation around so far, and what there is, is just guess work and rehashed links. Plus what is described as a stunning £30m pot for Houllier.
The NOTW report that Houllier is willing to let Carew go for £2.5m, he fancies Besiktas but a couple of Italian clubs fancy him. We can sell him easy enough, clubs will take the risk, question is would he want to move now rather than as a free transfer when he can make more ?
They also rehash the links to Jean Makoun from Lyon (think thats 7 now from Lyon or ex-Lyon) and Kazim Kazim (former Colin Kazim-Richards)
JUST IN
Alan ‘Nicko’ Nixon in the Mirror claims Randy will give Houllier the full Milner money of £20m plus another £10m if players like Davies, Carew etc, leave.
In this he claims we want Roque Santa Cruz, Lewis McGugan from Forest and Carrick from Man U (not after today !!).
Likely, hmmm not sure
Aston Villa News 24/7
No way will we get £2.5 mill if Carew is going to be offered the wages he’ll want imo.
If the deal’s been done between GH and Carew (which I’d put money on) and he is going, it’ll be undisclosed and nearer £1 mill.
That’s an extra £10k a week on his contract over 3 years.
yep, £2.5m too much and does anyone really doubt he will be gone ?
I don’t.
I’ve got it in my head he’s on £56K a week.
Any idea if I’m right Ian?
thats the reports
i dont know why you guys think 2.5 is too much, if someone thinks if they pay that and they will get carew, who they think who will get them goals, which may mean they get into europe, a championship, avoid relegation. Then Im sure they would pay 2.5 for the gamble that he might do something. And you dont actually know for 100 % that carew would demand x amount in wages, thats just logic. And football shows theres no room for common sense . Im just saying you guys are naive.
Fulham, Besiktas, those 2 Turkish clubs and whoever else has been linked lately all seem interested in John, get a bidding war going and if we can ship him out for £1M-£2.5M this summer and get his £55K wages off our books then we will have done well! Carew has been good for us, no doubt, but time to move on and for Villa to find a new number 10.
“And you dont actually know for 100 % that carew would demand x amount in wages, thats just logic. And football shows theres no room for common sense . Im just saying you guys are naive.”
I suspect it’s you that is being naive mate.
£56k is a lot of money in these tough times.
Don’t forget, it’s not just here, it’s all over Europe.
No way is Carew going to take, say, a £10k a week pay cut in Jan, if he can go in the summer for nowt, where his £2.5 mill estimate equates to an extra £50k a week over a year, £25k a week over 2 years etc etc.
It’s a last payday for him and if I was in his shoes, I’d be looking to do the best deal for me, regardless if I ever got a game or not.
In fact, as much as I do rate Carew, I suspect he’s probably hoping he doesn’t have to play too much.
He just looks totally f*cked, of late
It wouldn’t surprise me if we pay him some money to go.
We’re on a MAJOR cost cutting exercise imo, but it’s just being kept quiet.
The plug’s been pulled, at least for now.
“we can ship him out for £1M-£2.5M this summer”
Ah, I see where you’re coming from now.
You’re mistaken mate.
He’s out of contract in the summer, which means we won’t get a light, hence he has to be sold in Jan.
Sorry, typo. I meant January

Whilst Carew could well hold onto the end of his contract, it could cost him dear. January is never a good time for transfers as they are normally borne out of desperation ie. teams need a certain player to keep them up or make a push for a higher CL position. I think we can discount any CL aspiring clubs coming in for him, but relegation fodder may well be prepared to take the chance.
Will anyone be so interested in him in the summer, when the pressures are not there, I think not, especially if he has not played for 8/9 months! Sell him for a couple of million, he will go if he can pick up a decent wage, he will probably be more interested in the length of said contract, as it will be his last!
I dont expect much buying in January, Houllier has already said it is not a good time to do business and we are not desperate. Houllier knows that the kids stepping up to the plate has given him time. The fans are starting to come round to his type of football, they love the sight of their “own” succeeding and there is no reason to believe that the kids will not achieve a respectable position come the end of the season.
There may well be huge changes in the summer and many well known names will go, the likes of Petrov, Davies, Dunne, Reo Coker and the biggest Young, especially if he will not sign a new contract. With Downing and Albrighton making the wing positions their own, the position Young is now playing can be covered, probably better by the likes of Delph, Gardner and especially Bannan.
We are in a magnificent position I believe, we have 8/9 kids who are class, have played as a team together for several years and it shows, much of the interplay by those in the first team show this, it comes naturally to them. Sell the Billy Big B*llox, buy a father figure such as Cantona was at ManU, and the success as a TEAM may well at last be achieved, could be a great ride!
I think, we are 2-3 players short. We need a decent goal-scorer which will be our main objective. Maybe some for central midfield, although Bannan is doing extremly well. A few weeks ago, I would go for a defensive midfielder toio as I´m no big fan of NRC. But at the moment I would go for Clark who is doing so well. He and Albrighton are the finds of the season.
30 mio trasfer kitty sounds tremendous, but whats about wage structur. Obviously, we have to sell. But our squad isn´t so big, but maybe we have further young players who could do a good job.
Joty, I can agree with you about a goalscorer, a 20/25 goals a season would be magnificent; unfortunately every team in the world of football is chasing such a pot of gold!
As regards central midfield, we are about to become overloaded with class players, all under 22 years of age. They will play as a team, because that is what they have been doing for 4+ years.
Finds of the season, you are spot on, but I would go further, every kid that has come in has done us proud. Fair play to Houllier he plays them rather than stick to “1st” teamers played in all sorts of weird positions, as under the previous regime!
IMO our future will be built around Bannan, he has had the class since he was 16, probably our best playmaker since Merson, and I believe he will be better.
To all the fans, I would say get down to VP on Reserve and Youth Matches nights, it costs nothing, you can park in the ground, the football is excellent and bloody hell anything is better than watching Coronation Street, surely? You will realise how good our Youth coaches and scouts are!
I seriously doubt he will get £30m to spend.
petrov has to go in the summer, bannan is twice the player he is, I have been told by people in the know that we already have 2 players coming in january.
UP THE VILLA………….
Apart from a left back, I can’t see the point of bringing in more squad players in January. When everyone is fit we have a strong squad already.
Therefore, I think a lot will depend on where we are after Christmas. If we are in mid table or thereabouts, I would be happy to go with what we’ve got and keep giving the kids as much experience as possible. They’ll all be much better next season and a couple of top summer signings could see us really challenge then.
But if we are an the heels of the top four after Christmas then I think GH would have to bring in two top quality players to give it a real go.
if big john had played against mu he would of had a field day albrighton s crossing was superb think we should keep big jon or get a tall striker up the villa
Considering most of Albrighton’s crosses were made at speed on the break, I have a feeling Carew would have still been hanging around on the halfway line when they came in the box.
UTV
Dudley two posts, could not agree more with your sentiments. Carew will not fit in with this new, fast, quick thinking football cant keep up! With all the youngsters making good impressions I agree it makes sense to bide our time on signings.
Whilst I am not stupid enough to think all of them will make it, if only 4/5 do it will make a tremendous difference to Houllier’s thinking going forward.
I wonder whether Houllier knew about the clutch of youngsters we had just below first team level, before he joined?
