Clarification on 7-12th comment – Lost in Translation

The Media have run with these comments today

“It’s a club that according to me has belonged between seventh and 12th place in the Premier League.

And it has wound up some fans which is understandable as it downplays our expectations. However it should be noted that the Evening Mail picked these comments up from the following Le Figaro story

LINK

and then posted on H&V

Which ‘Pauliewalnuts’ on H&V translated as

“Aston Villa is not a club of the same level as Liverpool” he said. “Let’s be objective and honest, it is a club which, for me, finds itself between seventh and twelfth place. It is above all a historic club, which has won the European Cup. It is a club which a very good set up, a good team, and which demands just one thing: to progress year on year”. Why choose a mid table English club after having tasted a higher level in the past? “I had other offers, but this seemed to me the most interesting in terms of environment, of work conditions”

We have to be so very careful before reacting to these comments in a negative way maybe the words ‘lost in translation’ are perfect for this, maybe he simply meant 6th and not 7th which puts the right spin on it.

We should certainly not go OTT on these words until we hear the press conference at 2PM today

For me it is more concerning we have yet to hear who Houllier’s main coaches will be as that breeds uncertainty !!

Oh and Villa website editor, get the ‘who’s who‘ page on the OS sorted no Houllier listed on there, you have had nearly 48 hours to update it :-)

  1. We belong between 7th and 12th? Then who belongs above us? Historically if we go by that we belong 4th every season. Spurs and City don’t belong above us. We all belong where we end up. We could and shove have finished 4th if the refs gave us the PK’s we should have had and a manager that would have tested more and changed things up. It’s entertaining when people say you belong or deserve something. City and Spurs don’t belong any higher than we do.

  2. Nor do we belong between 7th-12th with the Everton’s, Bolton’s, Blackburn’s and Fulham’s.

  3. A lot has been said about the fans reaction the the GH appointment but maybe we are in danger of becoming a little soft when it comes to being fickle or booing their own club.

I remember the following quotation from Roy Hodgson when he was at Fulham:

‘We inherited this from France where you can go 17 games unbeaten and get booed off for losing the 18th.’

I’m sure Gerard will cope with the Villa fans.

  4. People aren’t reading what he said. He didn’t say that we belong in 7th to 12th. He is saying that, recently, we’ve found ourselves in such positions. Which we have over the last decade.

The remainder of his comments make clear, to me at least, that he thinks we can achieve more—as we have in the past.

  5. I am certain this is just a case of GH not being quite up to speed with the current Premier League pecking order.

Over the last 2 years we have seen a definite top 8 and then a points gap, then roughly 9th-14th and then a bottom 6 or so.

When GH was at Liverpool every year the same 6 clubs dominated; United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle/Leeds. Then every year there was a chasing group; us, Blackburn and a few others, i.e 7th -12th .

Microsoft live translates his comment thus; “this is a club that is, for me, between 7th and 12th.”

It’s no big deal; he is still aiming to take us forward regardless of the numbers. He has said that the aim is to win silverware and get us into Europe.

  6. Just not happy with the press conference, I kept on thinking, wow this is underwhelming. I was cringing when he was reading the former player, obviously written for him, and can’t get excited about the appointment at all.

I will give him a chance tho and get behind the team but i can’t say I am overly impressed but then maybe I was never going to

  7. I loved the interview relaxed with a view and plan for the future. we need as fans to realistic and the views on this sitejust show how pie in the sky some fans views are!!

Patience is a virtue lets see what happens i personally look forward to a better passing game with a solid plan and lets all hope for that elusive champs league spot

  8. why did the french reporter say mid table in premier league?
6th placed is not mid-table the last time I looked. Idiots!

  9. Last time I looked we were fourth

  10. To be fair, Tottenham and Man City have moved ahead of us in terms of quality. So to finish 7th is realistic.

  11. I think GH was talking about how he experienced Villa as a club during his time at Liverpool. Under Doug we certainly occupied the middle ground and were “middling”/mediocre in every sense. That is how he would have seen Villa.

I genuinely don’t think he would have joined us if he thought, historically and generally speaking, we were a mid-table club. He said at the press conference that we have a very good squad and base to build on for success. I don’t think he views the Villa of the Randy Lerner era as mid-table at all. He knows full well what MON achieved and the money invested.

The quotes suffer from a combination of being taken out of context and losing their meaning in translation. The way The Daily Mail leapt on them, for example, and reported them today showed them to be entirely at odds with what GH said in his conference. In the conference he was very, very positive about the club, its status, history and ambition.

Let’s not fall for this classic bit of press foul play. They need a story, they need a crisis club to sell their papers.

I fear the London press will be doing plenty more spinning and winding over the next few weeks and months ahead…I sense they will not be giving GH an easy ride. I just sense they will do all they can to undermine him. I hope I am wrong.

Let’s get behind GH. He’s a good man, a winner and a class act. After today’s press conference I have warmed to him greatly. Villa could offer his impressive career a fine Indian summer – all we need to be is patient and offer our support. Let’s take things that the press throw at us with a huge dose of salt.
