Mirror reports Houllier – DoF role, KM and Staunton coach, the model – look at the Browns

Sometimes I wonder at our own fans including myself !!

The Mirror are reporting a so called Dream team and rumoured today with Houllier as DoF, KM as head coach and Staunton assisting. I am also seeing rumours of Dean Saunders being involved and it would make as I said in the ‘Villa Way’ post sense of what we have heard.

People maybe shocked at this but the pattern if you look across the water is there, almost exactly the same.

When the Cleveland Browns failed again last season half way through Randy made a change of strategy and went for what we would call Director of Football but they call the ‘President’. So Randy went out and interviewed the candidates (you have to do that for the NFL) but ended up with the guy in Mike Holmgren, proven winner.

However they still had Eric Mangini as coach who had a difficult start to the season but finished strong and whilst some debate remain Randy stayed loyal to Mangini and he is now working under Holmgren and a General Manager who does the recruiting. Holmgren then went ahead and refreshed the whole of what they call the back and front office with his guys including the scouting and player recruitment.

That is the exact system I believe will happen at Villa, it is a system that has never worked in this country and for sure for Randy for his really first major call at VP this is THE major one for now and the future.

The system will be in place, it HAS to work.

  1. Also, American sports have this exact sort of thing. We typically have a coach/manager (what you would consider to be a manager) and a general manager (which you would consider to be a DOF). It works well here, and, in fact, I think it’s even better suited to a game that has become as global as football. And don’t give me, “They’re Yanks, we’re British.” This has nothing to do with national identity. We’re trying to find the best way to run a sports franchise. There is nothing particularly unique about British football that would suggest the approach other countries have used won’t work here.

    • We are not an sports franchise we are Premier League Football club based in England.

Fuck the way Americans run their pathetic sports.

“theres nothing to to suggest that it wont work over here”

How about the number of clubs that have tried this stupid approach and it has failed?

and as for Staunton as coach, hahahaha this just gets better and better.

      • It also works at all the top clubs all over Europe. FC Barcelona have not done too bad with it down the years

Though Newcastle fans were totally against the idea when Dennis Wise was employed in the role alongside Keegan.

        • massive difference though DV, Wise was imposed on top of Keegan, that never works, we have the other way round to some extent with Houllier’s total acquiescence

          • Yes that’s true.

The coach has to be 100% in favour of the arrangement. Some coaches really welcome with it.

I think Ancelotti is very happy with the system at Chelsea; and it certainly appears to working for him!

            • think KM would not mind as reserve coach he worked with whoever was manager and whatever system they wanted at reserve level

(reserve level should match up with first team for continuity)

which is probably why they think it could work as KM has no ego, whereas for example Redknob’s is bruised after having VDV forced upon him by Levy when it was the one position they did not need

              that is where trouble lies

              • I think that is a bit of a negative slur against KM. He has to be passionate not passive in this arrangement or it won’t work.

Many top coaches in the world swear by the arrangement not because they are passive or have no ego but because it allows them to focus and be more effective coaches. And it makes the club more successful and so enhances their own achievements.

Like I say it seems to be working brilliantly at Chelsea with DoF, Head Coach and Wilkins.

      • No, Juan Pablo, Villa is a sports franchise. You just like to think it’s unique from other teams and sports.

  2. Shouldn’t the manager just manage the team and not deal with the deal making? Other countries in Europe do it and it works fine. Let KM do what he does best and that is coach.

  3. Staunton? Muahahahaha!

  4. Staunton is a turn coat arse and I would be disgusted if he came be to Villa for a THIRD time… feck off to Liverscouse!

    • Under no circumstances should ronald fecking macdonald be let loose at vp he hasn’t got a clue and if he gets the job they can stick there s ticket up there yanky arses

  5. Oh great a 62 year old geriatric’s with a dodgy ticker is coming to be our Director of Football ….. Exactly when has this ever worked in the Premiership eh ? This will be a disaster – we need a manager – i.e. someone who takes total control of the playing side….. Do you see Manure – Chelski – Citeh – Arse or the Spuds with a DoF – No of course you don’t – Because it doesn’t work !!!
As for linking that turncoat Staunton – yeah he’s Villa died in the wool ain’t he ? As I recall he couldn’t wait to sod off back to Liverpool on his bosman deal and he made such as success of his roles at the Republic and Darlington didn’t he -NOT !
I really fear for our club under Lerner ….. if he thinks he can run it like his true love (Cleveland Browns) than we’re in for a long hard season.

  6. Get the feck out of VP liar leech lerner!

  7. Lerner, krulak, faulkner out! clueless moron’s

  8. Calling our chairman clueless, criticising his approach and saying you want him out is the most clueless thing I’ve read.

You can’t judge him on what you’ve read in the paper. Lerner is a very capable business man and knows exactly what he’s doing, and he’s backed the club a lot financially. We should all wait until there is actually something concrete to base a judgement on, and stop being so angry and fickle. The man to be angry at is MON, and the man we should be supporting is Lerner

  9. it is clear I am not 1005 behind these moves IF true

however as a Villa fan with reservations I am prepared to see what happens and judge at the end of the season, then we will know. I suspect KM knows he has that leeway as well, so upto him really to prove us wrong.

starting at Stoke who have already sold out amongst a lot of optimism after a bad start and we know how they will play

  10. huys why the f*** are you being so f******* negative we dont know whats gonna happen in the next year so stop being such a moody bunch and support the team u love!

  11. Geraarrrdd, Gerrraarrrd Houllier.

Good times are on the way!!!
    UTV SOTC

  12. Ian, you right that we should wait and see what future brings.

But we can have our view and feeling as fans. We are putting in a lot of money, we are the clients and without paying clients no football club would exist. Sometimes you have the feeling a Chairman alone is responsible for the health of a club.

What will be interesting in this new manager combination will be the responibilities to each member. Who is training the squad(think it will be KM), who is selecting the team for a game, who dictates the tactic, who makes the player changes during a game, who makes decisions on buying and selling players and about wage structur. That would be interesting to know, if such a constellation will be establish.

  13. we have to know that Joty for as you say clarification and make sure we know who is responsible for good or for bad results

  14. We’ve got to find an edge to compete with those teams ahead of us because obviously we can’t do it with money – bringing in as many managers as possible might just do it.

  15. On the Holmgren thing, it wasn’t necessarily a case of Randy deciding to keep Mangini on.

Holmgren was basically given “buck stops here” responsibility for the results on the field. That included deciding whether or not to retain Mangini. There was some surprise when Holmgren, after meeting with Mangini, decided to retain him.

    http://www.cleveland.com/budshaw/index.ssf/2010/01/mike_holmgrens_decision_to_kee.html

“Mike Holmgren had a chance to stamp the Browns organization with his own people and create the shared “wave length” he so glowingly talked about at his introductory press conference.

Why would he pass on that opportunity?

    Some possibilities:
    * He believes Eric Mangini is the next Bill Belichick (doubtful)
    * The head coach he’d like to hire isn’t available. (Possible)
    * Holmgren is primed to return to the sidelines himself, sooner than later, and will use the next year to evaluate the team as well as the head coach running it (Not impossible).

In other words, Mangini either succeeds next year or Holmgren takes over as coach with his hand-picked GM already answering to him.

Holmgren half-jokingly (we think) said at Tuesday’s press conference that all he’s ever said about leaving coaching behind is that he won’t coach “this year.” So who knows?

What we do know is that instead of hand-picking a GM-coach tandem, he will now hire a GM under him and over Mangini and hope they all end up singing “Kum-bah-ya” around the campfire.

Will Mangini be better if he just worries about coaching and not about every other detail of the organization? Who wouldn’t be?

But it’s hard to imagine Holmgren and Mangini meshing philosophically on the big-picture issues like — oh, I don’t know — players, offense in the NFL in 2010 and the quarterback’s role in it.

In bringing back Mangini and (reportedly) his entire coaching staff, Holmgren must be hoping to influence the passing game from afar because it certainly needs an overhaul.

You can run the ball the way the Browns did and win some games. The running game is Mangini’s calling card.

But you don’t win big in this league by treating the quarterback position as one of eleven as Mangini did all through training camp and well into the season. Both quarterbacks got worse last year, which is how you start 1-11.

Mangini did well to finish up last season as well as he did. He brings undeniably important tenets to a football team. Discipline. Accountability.

And giving any coach only one year is hardly fair. But Holmgren’s mandate isn’t about being fair. It’s about building an organization with pieces that fit and that together bring the promise of a Super Bowl for years to come.

Maybe next year will prove Holmgren did just that. But for now it looks like he made the job far more complicated than necessary, and it’s fair to wonder why.”

So is it a case of Randy telling Houllier, “you’re the one responsible for the club’s results. For now, KM is the first-team coach/game-time manager. If you think there’s someone available who can deliver better results (even if its yourself), you’re free to sack/demote KM, because I’ll judge your performance by what is achieved on the pitch (with some financial measures considered as well).”?

  16. or is it all just a cunning plan so we’re never sure who to boo…

  17. yep I think it is that Lev, right down the line you said

    * He believes Eric Mangini is the next Bill Belichick (doubtful)
    * The head coach he’d like to hire isn’t available. (Possible)
    * Holmgren is primed to return to the sidelines himself, sooner than later, and will use the next year to evaluate the team as well as the head coach running it (Not impossible).

all of those are equally applicable to the possible situation now, the similarities from my point of view are striking

  18. god i just want a manager! I don’t care who now and who cares if stan buggered off or not? We dont have anybody would could bring in that only ever played for villa and nobody else and besides it would be an assistant so really who gives a toss if he didn’t lead ireland to the world cup final. So sick of seeing us being so negative about everybody. We don’t want houllier cos he’s old, we don’t want a dof cos they don’t work, we dont want stan cos he hasn’t won anything, we don’t want kmac cos he has no passion, i mean the list goes on but how’s about we start to look at the good stuff that could come from these guy’s and a new set up. Lets look to a good future and not depress each other about what might go wrong when it hasn’t. Right i am now going to go and check my matress as i am sure my bed may fall apart when i get into it, oh that’s right it wont. For one minute i had been brainwashed by the negativity that we seem to be perpetuating. Kno we all have opinions but lets be positive guy’s, please? Utv
