On this post it appears that Dave Woodhall was spot on with the information he was being told by the club/others and it does appear IF the Houllier rumours are true we will be trying a totally different way at VP.
The key phrase being
we need someone who understands how important the job of Aston Villa manager is.
Now part of this reminds me of what Dave later said was the ‘Villa Way’ some kind of method that has run throughout the club from the start. For me it means that there is continuity and long running relationships as shown by the high number of loyal servants who have stayed at the club throughout different regimes. It means in the context of the managerial role I believe the concept that the managerial staff must have links to Villa in the past as a player, they must GET the club.
Hence I believe what is Randy’s apparent keenness to promote MacDonald he knows the ‘Villa way’. However lets not forget when Ellis was here he always reverted to ‘Villa men’ Big Ron, Brian Little, John Gregory, Graham Taylor with different margins of success.
Is it why rumours of Staunton and Dean Saunders as coaches may ring true ?
It is why when Randy looks back the most success partnership was really Little/Gregory/Evans, all Villa men.
Is this the replication Randy is trying to make, is the Villa way back again after a 7 year sojourn ?
Is it why when the General said MON was bigger than the club that Randy was never going to employ a so called ‘big name’ a Sven for examples who would dominate. What Randy wants I think is an all inclusive club with every part being equal for the pursit of success. It is why I believe Graham Taylor is advising him because he believes the club is everything and the indvidual only part of it, football socialism in action !
Is it a good thing, is it able to push us forward as we all wish, time will tell, I guess Randy has earnt the right to pursue it and it does tie things together.
Aston Villa News 24/7
ASTON VILLA – founder of football league first foreighn manager – first succesful director of football FITS IN DUNT IT
He should make a choice either Houllier or MacDonald. Not both, we need one man calling the shots
jpa he cant do that because huiller heath condition and his heart attack and stuff
Well if thats the case he shouldnt be employed in any capacity at all, We are not a charity!
Directors of football have failed at every english club that have tried them. There a pointless waste of space. Why pay 2 people to do 1 mans job? Look how much of a disaster it was at Spurs when they tried this idea.
I hope Krulak reads this site because he needs to realise they are going about things the wrong way and its a recipe for disaster
jpa kmac is a tried and trusted coach and if anyone knows how to use em its americans
He may be a good coach in that case have him as 1st coach and Houiller as the boss. Not some stupid mix up with a head coach anf DoF.
Americans might know how to run an NFL team but its starting to look like they aint got a clue how to run Premiership football club
agread mate but i think apart of the problem is they need a big name or webcams gone and the only one AVAILABLE is him and randy dont want him to have another heart attack in the dugout
This is yet more bluff and bullshit from the owner and the board. Fed up of them TBH. The haven’t managed to change American Football, and they ain’t going to change football in the UK. We are about to embark on many years of mediocrity with this regime.
im all up for THE VILLA WAY as long as we bring back laurson mcgrath angel collymore(purely cos of passion) and milninho
If i was young appointing Houllier wouldnt impress me in the slightest. Hopefully he is easily impressed.
I agree with wurzel, there starting to piss me off now

MOYES BACK IN
AND KOEMAN AND KLINSEMAN AND HITZFELD
This can work when the roles are clearly defined, there is mutual trust and the mangager fully approves of the concept.
A Sporting Director/General Manager alongside a Head Coach works at the very top clubs all over Europe.
It allows the players and manager the freedom to concentrate on preparing for and winning football matches.
Clearly Kevin MacDonald would only accept the arrangement if he thought it could work, if he thought he could form a close partnership with Houllier and if he was 100% in favour of the idea.
Has it ever worked in the UK?
nope Wurzel, because the DoF dose the decisions but never takes the stick, however if the coach in KM then clearly Houllier is the number one, so in a way it could work
BUT
they have to let us know the clear demarkation lines
I still have a feeling Houllier could bring in his own man
Well that is not the reason it hasn’t worked here yet. it’s because it’s usually been forced on a manager who previously enjoyed absolute power and was not consulted in the arrangement.
It will work here one day though, just depends which club is the first to get it right.
It has to be a close partnership based on utmost mutual trust and respect or it is doomed. Various duties are shared between the two men. But on the continent there is no fixed format, the roles can vary quite a bit from club to club. It does not necessarily have to be ‘suit and tracksuit’; The most important thing is that they can work together, are on the same wavelength and pull in the same direction.
DV for us if it happens we have to to know two clear things
who is responsible for the tactics and players on matchday
who is responsible for buying players
I can see your point but only if we were looking for blame if things went wrong.
Why have the investigation before the crime?
Ideally both would have input on everything; then one would have the final say on some things and the other on others and even then on certain issues they might be flexible. But if things go well do we really need know that much detail?
If Villa were to come up with a successful formula, would it do anyone any good to broadcast it?
yes whether for good or bad we as fans should be told. We will lose games and there is always a blame game to be played and the fans have to be clear on that.
for instance we know the Blues game is what 6 weeks away, for that game for which MON was unbeatable you know what will be said if we fail to win, even a draw, in circumstances like that there has to be a clear leader
Agree with you there has to be a clear leader on match day, and that will always be the head coach, who you assume would be KM.
But if all goes well, IMO they should not be obliged to make public every detail of their working relationship.
Remember Clough and Taylor’s roles were often merged. It wasn’t till after their deaths that people had an insight into who usually did what in the day-to-day stuff.
true but this is a different situation and KM does not come across as a leader at HT or making changes.
I have been saying for a while LERNER is transforming into Doug Ellis.
Lerner is doing everything on the cheap.
PLEASE all you fanaftical LERNER supporters wake up. We are hewading back into mediocracy.
LERNER will and always intended to give the job to the cheaper option.
Lok at whats happened to our squad cant even name 25 players.
Lerner is the boss if as you KLERNER supporters have ben saing he wanted MON he must have had a contingency plan.
HE DID PULL INVESTMENT.
LERNER OUT
I am getting very worried about our owner TBH. His mouthpiece “The General” has stated on VV that AVFC are going to bring success to Villa a different way than spending money on top players and wages. And now are going to have a continental management system forced upon the club, a system that hasn’t worked at any UK football club before. Add to that the coplete lack of success of Mr Lerner’s other sports franchise, and I think Villa fans should be getting very worried.
ENOUGH LERNER OUT NOW.
SOMEONE EXPLAIN HOW HOULLIER IS THE VILLA WAY.
I BET HIS CHEAP MR CHAIRMAN (DOUG)

You can not have one person responsible for tactics, matchday etc and one for the recruitment of players. It has be done by one person, its a shit idea and it wont work.
