Houllier for Villa, yes PLEASE

Paul has posted the following in a rebuttal to myself over Gerard Houllier, possibly being Villa manager, in the act of fairness will reproduce it here

=========================================

Why Houllier?

1. In 6 seasons at Liverpool his win percentage was 52% – better than any Villa Manager in the 20th (or 21st) century.

2. In 6 seasons in the Premier League his team finished 4th 3rd 2nd 5th 4th and 5th – the season before he took over Liverpool had finished 7th behind Villa.

3. Most importantly – his team beat Birmingham on penalties in the 2000 Worthington Cup Final and Trevor Francis cried. Priceless.

  1. Houllier is a shit choice and teaming him up with MacDonald is a farce. Has this yank idiot got a clue?

  2. yep John, has Nick (NJR6) not heard of God, Staunton, Townsend, Dunne, McParland etc.

  3. just to add oil to this all, Mysteryman on VT (whether you believe him or not is up to you) has said they have yet to ‘make their minds up’

  4. apparently a photograph has been taken of the room being used to identify the correct candidate for the Villa Manager’s job. See for yourself at: http://bit.ly/dALgD5 – I only wish I understood what “enthalpy of formation” means? Is this 4-4-2 4-5-1 or what?

  5. ian i heard from a ‘source’ that they wer just going to think it over and could be announved today or monday but def no late that tuesday

  6. i think who ever its going to be will not please every one apart from moyers,
so lets wait and see who it is till we all make
    our judgements
non of them on the list will please all,
every one of them have made good and bad signing same as mon but what we need now is the stability it will bring which at the moment
    is very much lacking,

  7. Paul, that photo is briiliant! Probably in some underground bunker in London if the General has his way. Faulkner, Randy & the General all sitting around – “right lads, who knows anything football???”

On another note, if it’s Houllier & Kev Mac working together, I can see it working. Best combo from the available managers. Kev Mac seems to be a great coach and is well liked by the squad. Houllier will give the club the footballing backbone it needs with Mon and his staff gone. Never know, could prove to be a great appointment.

  8. If he could replicate his record at Liverpool here, then I’d say “yes please”. Surely the calibre of manager we should be after.

  9. agree stuart i think it could work ,
next best option to moyers ,
which looks like not happening pity)
but bring stan the man in as is number 2
2 loyal villan and one old head,
it has the makings of a good set up

  10. Houllier is by far the best candidate, especially if, as seems likely, he doesn’t get to spend much money. He is a great coach and tactician but dodgy on transfer market. I would prefer him to Moyes, and by a mile to most of the realistic candidates

  11. kiddervilla, are you Irish by any chance? I am and as much as I love Stan (presume your’e talking about Staunton?), he did a brutal job with the Irish team! But then again, he was thrown in at the deep end so he still could turn out to be a good coach. BTW, there was alot of Stan related banter on Irish radio as i’m sure a lot of the people here will know about. The phrase “i’m the gaffwa” being Stan’s legacy from his time as Ireland boss. Check this video out, it’s hilarious:

  12. Why all the negatives with Gerrad Houllier becoming the next Villa Manager. His track record with the Red scouse and Lyon are very good with trophys won at home and abroad
He’s got to be a better bet than K.Mac or Curbs as this mans achievements stands out and if, just say, he had won this lot as a past Villa manager then we would all be impressed

  13. Just read this on Houllier’s Wikipedia page.

“A lack of success in the following seasons when Liverpool struggled to qualify for the Champions League despite substantial investment in players, with what was perceived as negative one-dimensional tactics and unattractive football, a poor youth policy……”

Says it all. Liver pool may have won some games but a better manager would have won the league with that team and money!

Please I’ll take some ups and downs if it means we don’t have to watch negative footy.

I remember them in the 2003 league cup quarter final against Villa.
10 men behind the ball, they go 2 goals down, after that constant running in to the box and falling over, they got 2 pens and a free kick which shouldn’t have been + one other goal. really unattractive and very unsporting! don’t want that at Villa Park! do you?

  14. Right – I’m sitting with a beer at the Weyfest Festival. I’m now turning my ‘phone off until Monday so please reconcile your differences and make sure we have a new manager by then. Thanks Paul ;-)

  15. Sky Sports just said their ‘sources’ have indicated that there are only 2 candidates left for the Villa job. Houllier and KevMac

  16. let’s hope sky sports are right. I cant wait till all of this is over. Seems everything with us takes forever. Barry took two years to go, milner took all summer we last one the league in the early eighties, deadly doug defies father time and lives forever, and now feels like we have been deliberating a new manager for an eternity ha ha

  17. oh bad error on my behalf i put one instead of won! Back to primary school for me. Wonder if we will have a new manager by the time i graduate?

  18. Villa are shit.

    • YOU ARE AN INBRED AND I’M SURPRISED YOU KNOW HOW TO SWITCH ON A COMPUTER LET ALONE CONVEY BLOG MESSAGES
ONE THING YOU MUST REMEMBER SHITE FAN – YOUR TEAM OF SHITE WILL BE THERE NORMAL 10 POINT BEHIND THE GREAT ASTON VILLA IN THE FUTURE.

YOU HAVE NO CLASS, YOU HAVE NO HONOURS, YOU ARE A LITTLE FUCKING CLUB AND FULL OF SHITE

      UTV SOTC

    • Uptheblues,
welcome to the world of supporting Aston Villa. As Paul on his road to Damascus had hos damascene moment but initially found it difficult to comprehend I understand that you are finding it difficult to understand why you are drawn to Aston Villa. Perhaps I could help with a few suggestions that might help you clarify your thoughts.

      Is it the pre-eminent History?

Is it the FA Cup wins? **

Is It the League Cup wins? **

Is it the ground with flushing toilets?

Is it the European Cup win? **

      Is it the League Championships?

Is is the superior catering facilities?

Is it because your mother is a closet Villa fan?

Is it because you are a secret Claret drinker and like the colour claret? ***

Is it because you’ve wanted to travel to a football match amongst folks whose fathers and brothers are two separate people?

Perhaps it’s none of these reasons and it’s just because you love us because we’re such nice people.

Whatever reason it is … welcome.

** Cup = a thing they present to you when you win a competition. By becoming a Villa Fan you’re going to see one soon.

      *** Claret = a type of wine ****

**** Wine = a drink for cultured people

P.S. it might be advisable to change your name from UpTheBlues now you’re a Villa fan – perhaps I could suggest “RightChoice” which would seem appropriate.

  19. blues gonna finish above you and win both derbys you thick vilers.

    • Dumb bluenose, do one

    • Tut Tut. The plural of derby is derbies. Perhaps you don’t have what is takes after all to become a Villa fan.

May I suugest that when you go to your place of learning tomorrow you go to the “big person” ** at the front of your class and ask if you could be placed in the remedial class. After a few years there please re-apply for your Aston Villa fan status.

Be good and they might let you out early.

** the “big person” is often called a teacher but at your place of learning he/she could be called a nurse or a warder.

  20. Houllier gonna have another heart attack when he see’s how shit you lot are

    • Another remedial Blues fan. Now look, “see’s” is not possessive and therefore does not require an apostrophe. You are also missing the full stop at the end of your sentence. Tut Tut, who is teaching you Blues fans these days. I thought that when we got you walking upright in the early 1960s you would subsequently develop at a reasonable rate.

Talking about “sentences” – how long have you got left on yours?

Please ask your warder if you can have a copy of Lynne Truss’ book, “Eats, Shoots and Leaves” where you will find a useful diatribe on punctuation.

(Please note my use of the hanging apostrophe after the final s in Truss).

Another example of this hanging apostrophe would be in the sentence “Someone stole Blues’s trophie’s”.

Now this is wrong on several counts:

Firstly, Blues’s should be written as Blues’ when indicating the possessive form.

Secondly, trophie’s is a plural and therefore requires no apostrophe.

Thirdly, Blues have only ever won one trophy, to my knowledge, so possessive plural is not required.

When your warder next lets you have a pencil please write on your cell wall one hundred times….

“Blues trophy, Villa’s dozens of trophies”.

Bye for now. Be good and if you can’t be good stay locked-up.
