Better pray for NO injuries then

Villa have named the squad for the new season just 22 names

Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan, James Collins, Carlos Cuellar, Curtis Davies, Habib Beye, Richard Dunne, Eric Lichaj, Stephen Warnock, Luke Young, Stewart Downing, Jonathan Hogg, Stephen Ireland, Isaiah Osbourne, Stiliyan Petrov, Nigel Reo-Coker, Moustapha Salifou, Steve Sidwell, Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor, John Carew, Emile Heskey

Now this does not include the likes of Bannan, Albrighton, Clark as the three kids to make an impression this season but includes the likes of Salifou, Hogg, Lichaj and Osbourne then you can see how bad the state of the squad is for the next 4 months.

We have had some injuries and managed them but more will happen (Lichaj in the reserves last night) and with just 22 senior players of which 4 are hardly that and 3 or 4 kids then we have to pray for good luck to the senior players and the key ones, Gabby, Young(s), Dunne, Petrov, Collins

Just to be clear I want the likes of Albrighton, Clark to have chances but in some areas we have precious little known quality cover. It is OK playing Albrighton for some games but he will need a rest for a week or two what happens then ?

So one or two of these out will be a major issue for the club and one I think we will not overcome.

  1. ian remember un 21 dont need to be listed ;)

  2. We have one less player then last year (Shorey). With a few more kids capable of stepping up.

    • yes but we got lucky last season, no major injuries to key players

got to get lucky this season as well

Albrighton obviously stepped up, Clark can but covered well

but in other areas it is so weak, especially CM with Milner gone, he worked well with Petrov, Ireland is a totally different player.

and as we saw at Newcastle will not work

    • We also had Harewood, Marshall and Bouma who was coming back from injury.
I know hardly makes a difference, but still senior players.

  3. of course but only Albrighton and Clark are ready

The Fonz, well KM seems not to rate him which is strange

Bannan – not convinced he can make it

    Weimann – bad injury

  4. Told you so looks like KM has the job.
General quoted as saying doesnt want a manager who would walk out on a club.
WHAT A DISGRACE THIS IS A WAY OF PREPARING FOR THE OBVIOUS KM WILL BE APPOINTED.
    All down to money surely!
    LERNER OUT NOW.

    • Hi TED,
seems you are absolutely positive KM will be appointed so I was wondering what odds you got at the bookies and how much have you staked?

Given that you’ve been pretty certain for some time you must be set to make a killing. Well done.

My money is on Mick McCarthy at 300/1 but there again I don’t know anything about who the next manager will be I’m just guessing and I quite like Mick McCarthy’s style (although I do realise he’s not everybody’s “cup of tea”).

  5. We only ever played 11 players last year anyway so what’s the issue? Hopefully we use the likes of Sidwell and NRC, add to the fact were not in Europe, then we will strengthen in January

  6. true Maradona, but none of them were hardly ever injured and when they were it was easy to swap in say Cuellar for Collins

Ash has missed what 3 games due to injury ?

    • Missed one premier league match last season because of suspension.
I think he missed one league cup match for the same reason.

  7. NO MANAGER,NO NEW PLAYERS AND RANDY LEANER IS TURNING INTO THE NEW MR ELLIS.
WHAT HAPPENED TO PROUD HISTORY AND A BRIGHT FUTURE???

  8. On the bright side, it would indicate that we have many non-injury prone players.

If worse comes to worse, we could always play Guzan at right-back.

  9. indeed Bobby but problem the doctor and fitness guy who did really well have both left with MON

  10. Gents we also have Fabian Delph!! whens he expected back?

  11. No heskey in there? Has something truly amazing happened since I last came on here?

    • If you notice the original post from Ian there is a comma after John Carew’s name where Emile Heskey’s name should be. Either Ian is crap at “cut’n'paste” or it’s wishful thinking on his part – probably both ;-)

Here is the full squad with (hopefully) accurate “cut’n'paste”:

Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan, James Collins, Carlos Cuellar, Curtis Davies, Habib Beye, Richard Dunne, Eric Lichaj, Stephen Warnock, Luke Young, Stewart Downing, Jonathan Hogg, Stephen Ireland, Isaiah Osbourne, Stiliyan Petrov, Nigel Reo-Coker, Moustapha Salifou, Steve Sidwell, Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor, John Carew, Emile Heskey.

  12. Heskey is in the squad. Ian just left him out by accident, it appears.

I heard that Delph is expected back in December or January. But I don’t know whether that’s true. The timetable would seem to be right given the nature of his injury.

Have we heard anything further about the injuries to Ireland and Lichaj?

  13. adjusted !!

Delph I read somehwere will be lucky to play at all until March, no point worrying about him

and the Villa silence machine on injury updates is in full throw

take Weimann, announced by Villa 2 months, his own FB page says 6 months

  14. it was just someone who had the same kind of injury, ACL wasn’t it and just how long it took them

given the total lack of info from the club it is the only thing we go on.

  15. Liverpool have only named 21 players, so we dont have the smallest squad of over 21 players.

  16. a good article for those to read (especially those who expected villa to appoint mourinho or hiddink this week [sarcasm?])

    http://www.villatalk.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4163

I don’t think it is as bad a situation as you seem to portray ian. It is far from ideal that is for sure, but I believe we have a good owner and too good of a system to collapse like some say we have.

Only time will tell, but I believe in this instance that time is now on our side. History isn’t written in 6 weeks…

    UTV

  17. Hopefully key players don’t pick up too many bookings aswell and have to serve bans.

  18. If this is the first team

    Friedel
    Young Collins Dunne Warnock
    Young Petrov Ireland Downing
    Carew Agbonlahor

Then this is the 2nd XI

    Guzan
    Cuellar Davies Clark Beye
    Albrighton Sidwell Reo-Coker Bannan
    Delfoneso Heskey

Here are another 5 young hopefuls Delph, Lichaj, Hogg, Weimann, Osbourne

  19. Taken from ESPN.com, players we can use not including the 22

(Villa can also use: Marc Albrighton, Nathan Delfouneso, Barry Bannan, Ciaran Clark and Fabian Delph).

Man U only has 23 roster spots filled.

It would of been nice to have some more cover, but I don’t think this is end of the worlds stuff.

I’m not going into this season thinking were going to make a challenge for a top spot, but really we’re the same team as last year minus one regular player (Milner). I think we’ll be fine. Not headed for regulation.

  20. doubt’s about KM 6 against newcastle out versus Rapid and could have been 6 versus Everton. We need a solid midfield any suggestions where we might get one
