Shortlist drawn up before MON resigned, things start to make sense, Hughes possibly next manager

The Telegraph have just said

which Telegraph Sport understands should be made somewhat easier by the fact that the club’s board had drawn up a managerial shortlist before O’Neill resigned.

This is a quality paper and not a muck racker and re-enforces my thoughts earlier that Randy forced MON out.

Now the usual provsio, the Telegraph could be talking rubbish but frankly those we thought were have actually turned out to be true.

So my theory – will see if true

Mark Hughes next manager

why ?

  • only signed two year contract at Fulham, easy to get out of
  • would take Ireland like a shot, that is when Ireland played really well, however to be fair we have this article, but the previous season he was great
  • not signed a single player despite money
  • Lerner I think would love him
  • Rumours that in May he was being lined up for Villa, did Randy expect MON to go at their meeting in May ?

    Fulham fans are uneasy

    25-1 on Ladbrokes, having that

By the way this is my third theory just today !!

that is how quick things are changing

    1. Ian you just am always right arent you??? its stupidly annoying, if someone told you randy was forcing mon out, you would have had a go and read between the lines and said that was a load of rubbish….. so stop putting re-inforces my thoughts, fucking hell pisses me right off.

Yes your theory always changes cuz you come up witha theory for every pice of news, so you dont actaully sit down and think about it before a news story is published.

      • so when I say

“So my theory – will see if true”

hardly proclaiming I know something special, this blog is news and VIEWS and it is meant to spark a debate people may or may not want to get involved with

Talksense, you must like it to comment !!

    2. fulahm fans uneasy?????????????? fuck me what that make us villa fans

    3. Love the blog, Ian. Not worried about Chip.

    4. Why is it easy to get out of a two year contract?

If you have to pay it up that is around £6m. If you are looking to dispense with a manager and have his replacement lined up, save yourself £6m and don’t let the replacement sign a contract with a rival team!

The idea Lerner forced O’Neill out is gubbins – both had legitimate but conflicting concerns. Lerner was business minded and wanted to stop the spiralling Salary commitments. O’Neill needed to fight for a few more players to compete at the top level. This led to O’Neill realising the relationship no longer worked for him so he left.

    5. It’s got to be tripe. He’s got 25M to spend at Fulham and nothing to spend here, as well as a board that won’t give him the kind of backing/freedom he really wants.

If a managerial short-list existed before MON’s resignation it was a precaution, not a plan as Krulak’s statement definitely had an air of surprise about it. If there was a plan and Hughes was top of the list O’Neill would have been forced out sooner.

      • £25m to spend and no signings, guess what he was linked to IReland and Bellamy

Bellamy today said he would to work for Hughes but never mentioned Fulham

    6. I really hope Ireland decides to join us. He’s a quality player and has the flair that we have missed in centre mid for quite a while. I’m a massive fan of Milner, it’s a pity they won’t be playing together but Ireland could be our next superstar! Hopefully he’ll come back and play for Ireland too.

Intersting note – as far as I know Kevin McDonald was the coach of Ireland under Steve Staunton when Stephen Ireland quit international football. Actullay think it could be a good thing – at lesat he’ll be familar with McDonald, and I doubt it ws McDonald that he had a problem with.

Hoping for some good news headlines tomorrow….

    7. Hughes isn’t coming. Fullham won’t let him out. They just lost their manager only a few weeks ago and had to search to replace him. Villa’s troubles are not theirs so why expect them to make them so?

As fo succession lists, they are very common in our American business policy. You plan for the unexpected. Usually this means building managerial bench strength but in this case it means a ready list of candidates who won’t cost an arm and a leg to sign (lets Hughes out). Bradley is an interesting case. I wouldn’t see him starting in the EPL but you take your opportunities if offered. He is very organized and also low key. If he gets the job it is possible that Donovan could maybe come to Villa in January. Bradley knows how to get the best out of him

    8. Let’s bring in an english manager. The only respect we get is for having English players so let’s keep that going. Would like to see David platt or Paul Merson and just bring the youth in, sure we might not win anything for a few years untill they get going but sometimes you have to take 1 step back to go 2 steps forward.

    9. It won’t be Hughes…was watching the USA brazil game and the announcer said he talked to Friedel and other people at villa and they said that villa are most likely going for managers from Holland Italy or Germany

    10. Villa need a manager with gravitas. One of the things O’Neil did was to raise the interest in the club. Once the profile goes up, we get access to better players.

Sven would be great because he has the best scouting network in the world. We can’t out spend other teams, we need to outthink them. Bring in maybe lesser known players who can shine.

Klinsman is another person, that although has limited experience, could attract the right level of players to the club.

Martin Jol would also be a great choice. He did a great job at Spurs and I think he could take the club to the next level.

Also let us not forget in the next couple of years we will only be able to spend the money the club earns.

So all of the investment that Lerner is putting into the club will help us out in the near future.

I liked MON but towards the end his Clough complex began to shine through.

Thank you MON for the work you have done, but it is not time to move on and forward. At least this time we may get a good UEFA cup run!!

    11. Hi Ian., Other Villa fans … I can reveal that top of Randy Lerners list is Sam Allardyce. He has already made tentative contact with the Blackburn board to seek permission to talk to Allardyce. My information is that, he’ll quit Blackburn should he not gain permission and Kevin McDonald will continue as caretaker manager whilst a suitable “gardening leave” period can be established ! Probably not the high ranking big name you were expecting but my source has told me this will happen very very shortly.
One further bit of news is that the “fringe” players contacted Paul Faulkner 2 weeks ago to complain about the “shoddy” treatment they were receiving from O’Neill – his response to this ultimately started the process of him leaving Villa – in fact had he not tendered his resignation – Paul Faulkner was already lobbying Randy Lerner to dismiss him.

    12. ianrobo I don’t what your e-mail address is but need to let you know that Sven Goran Erikkson has jst left Birmingham Airport. He arrived on an Air France flight

    13. About shortlist, I wouldn´t read to much into it. Any Board will have such a list at any time, because you never know. In our case, disagreements must exist for a longer while. So, nothing special for me.

      M. Hughes and Eriksson would be my preference. Both are proofen, had their success and could attract good players – if we can afford them.

We have to look forward and have to support the Board, players and new Manager, although I was a fan of MON. Hopefully we can progress.

    14. Martin gave us respectability but never finish in the top four with Carew or Heskey or Sutton or Hartson!

Tottenham are a far better footballing team to watch and deserved 4th place last season.

Simon Grayson would make an excellent choice for our next manager, Leeds seem to play the ball on the ground at pace
      and with some creativity.

    15. All managers and clubs have to have a budget if they want to survive in the long term, a good manager is the one that spends that budget wisley and developes what he has at his proposal ( Villa have a first rate set of young players) david Moyes has done just that at Everton, MON needed to work with in those finacal limits that the club could afford, its not as if he had not recieved a good amount of money, and spent it on players that were warming the bench. was it frustration with him self that made him leave because it seems to me the ranting of a man who was more concern with his own standing than that of a man in charge of a club trying to be run on a firm finacal footing. which in the long term will result that the club will not be in the same finacial sutiation as a number of so called BIG clubs

    16. Any business where owner and manager aren’t talking would make pre-emtive plans should it all fall apart. Not sure how it’s forcing anyone out to have a backnup plan

    17. “Hi Ian., Other Villa fans … I can reveal that top of Randy Lerners list is Sam Allardyce. He has already made tentative contact with the Blackburn board to seek permission to talk to Allardyce.”

      Funniest joke of them all.

    18. [...] Shortlist drawn up before MON resigned, things start to make sense, Hughes possibly next manager The Telegraph have just said which Telegraph Sport understands should be made somewhat easier by the fact that the [...] [...]

    19. My choice of the next Aston Villa manager, would need to be someone of high profile who would be able too attract big name players to the club, if money was made available to him and in my opinion it would have too be J.Klinsman or Sven.G.Eriksson
