According to Ian McGarry on Radio 5 the final straw for MON was, wait for it
The clubs acceptance of a possible transfer of Brad Friedel to Fulham to replace Schwarzer
Also they speculate that MON never wanted Stephen Ireland and he was being forced onto MON who wanted cash

Yeah Villa fans, we be behind the team always, even if we become the next Pompey.
anyone think that the germany manager joachim loew would be an awesome manager to take charge of villa?
I can understand Lerner’s predicament, especially having read the statistics about the wage bill in this Telegraph article (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/astonvilla/7935765/Aston-Villa-spark-tug-of-war-for-Mark-Hughes-as-Martin-ONeill-quits-on-eve-of-new-season.html).
When Barry left O’Neill signed Sidwell on bumper wages. Sidwell now won’t move because he is well paid even though he doesn’t doesn’t play in the first XI (a similar problem exists with players like Luke Young and Curtis Davies).
Now Milner is going. O’Neill is wanting to sign Ireland, who is demanding club record wages. Aston Villa’s wage bill is an unsustainable 85% of turnover. It is £11m higher than Spurs (4th) and £21m higher than Everton (5th).
Given this I expect Lerner tried to apply a club wage cap. This meant all those players no longer needed have to be sold or O’Neill would have to sell some star names. I don’t believe this is about Lerner being poorer but about his business principles (he wants the club on a sound financial footing, unlike certain other owners of football clubs in England).
To add to this combustible mix, I don’t believe Lerner would tolerate another outburst as happened at the end of last season. Why should he? O’Neill has increasingly used the press to push his own arguments (with Lerner and Milner this Summer) but been horrified when others have used the press in the past (Barry).
So O’Neill goes, which is very sad for one of the best Villa teams for years, but there are good reasons. Thanks for the memories Martin. Let’s give our full support to the new manager who’ll have to trim the wage bill before he can shape his own team.
It really is ALL so sad. MON great manager – best wishes for the future. Lerner good owner with sound business principles – needs to act quickly now, for this will be the measure the fans will now judge you. Both have done great by Villa. The club needs a safe pair of hands now to steer the team into a new era. Perhaps, just perhaps, Curbishley could be the man. But how does anyone counter the greed of the players, who believe they are actually better than they are. Milner needs to remember who made him an England candidate, and consider how pitiful Barry has looked since joining Man City. As for a foreign manager, thats the last thing Villa need right now. As a life long fan, I will make my decision as to whether I stay or go, but only after time has been taken to consider the clubs response.
hahahahhahahahahahaha ….. dont listen to itk .. they knew nothing about MON resigning on Sunday night………. stop listening to them especially mysteryman (talks shit 99% of time)
Papers say David moyes is wanted!
Papers also say Sven wants the job and that Bradley is still favorite.
I can only think that some of the coments about Lerner are made by our younger supporters who do not remember the dire days of Ellis. Lerner has modernised the club and MoN got us punching above our weight (he was great manager for us) anyway the marriage is over between them.
Let the dust settle and stop all this bollox about lerner out – we do not want to be a laughing stock.
I was a big MoN fan – he could have done things better and I have hope that the next manager will under Lerner’s stewardship.
Anyway comparing him with other chairmen is very misguided. He has invested in the infrastructure, notably the academy. Times are hard and we maybe rewarded if we are financiallly astute!! Anyway does he not have a Villa Crest tattoo on his leg?
The Fox/Larry
Some astute observations!!
I can’t help thinking there’s a very ugly truth that we haven’t been told yet. MON has always honoured his contracts going back to his time at Shepshed, for him to quit like this something must be seriously wrong.
joachim loew !!!!!
David Moyes said he wishes Everton could afford to buy Landon Donovan.
Now doesn’t that throw up all sorts of possibilities?
JOACHIM LOEW!!!
JOACHIM LOEW!!!
JOACHIM LOEW!!!
Pity the papers were not saying David Moyes wants the vacent job instead ofDavid Moyes is wanted.Realy rate that guy he gets the very best out of his [players and most times they have not cost an armand a leg.Time will ultimately tell. UP THE VILLA
