Comments and Debate on Aston Villa

Keane is the answer, have no doubt about that

OK so what do we make of friendlies, after yesterday’s one it is easy to dismiss them as an irrelevance. So I preface this post with that because I believe friendlies count for little.

However in the current tournament in New York and I have been sad enough to watch both Spurs games, Robbie Keane has been the outstanding Spurs player in very high temperatures of 100 F. He has scored what I call two poachers goals as well as set up another one with a typical through ball. So given the proviso above and based on previous comments on this blog I have no doubt in saying this

MON, get KEANE he is totally 100% PERFECT for Villa.

Why do I say this, well I give these reasons

- He scores PL goals the type of poachers goals we lack

- He has the football intelligence that Carew and Gabby both lack to drop back into midfield to link the play

- At his age pace was never his game anyway and for the same age we got Merson with far more personal problems and look what he did

- He is destined to play for us and knows the area and can settle easily

- Believe he would be a popular signing for both the players and fans alike

At the tournament he refused to answer any questions about his future and in fact walked out of an interview when asked. Added to this today ‘Arry effectively put up him for sale so as long as Spurs do not play silly buggers a deal can and should be done.

There are a number of fans on the forum who will disagree with the statements above but if he came to Villa I think he would be a very popular and successful signing and showed in the heat he still has the desire, maybe the spell at Celtic did him well.

Wonder how many McGeady set up for him ?

100% agree he’s perfect. Weird the way he looks he looks like he’s 40 but with him and Carew starting and Gabby off the bench, or Carew off the bench for Gabby or Keane, with maybe 1 other striker (if Heskey is sold, depending on what happens with the Fonz), if our defense can hold up like last season, top 4 shouldn’t be far away.

agree we should go for Keane seriously but only at a reasonable price as he has no resale value due to his age. Six million at the most. What do others think?

  3. not bothered about resale value as such but whether he can cut it for 3 more years

    that is the real test

He is the perfect signing. Still got a few years in him and got a point to prove after being a flop at liverpool and being loaned out last year. If he costs £6m that is a good deal, we paid £6.75m for Merson 12 years ago and he was the same age as Keane now and that wasnt a bad signing.

Keane could turn out to be an excellent signing for a couple of years ang I hope we go for him.

Having watched him carefully tonight I agree, Leaned is the key. I really hope the rumours are true and we get both Ireland and Keane. Exciting times…

Keane’s ideal. Not my money it’s Randys’ so not too bothered about the price, just get the right players in.

    Don’t read goal.com. It’s a terrible site. They’re never right about anything.

I know other sites are saying he wants to keep him, but I’m not bothered. Keane said he would like to come to Villa and I’m pretty sure Redknapp would take the money.

Ireland and Keane would be an … interesting combination, given that Keane is the reason Ireland doesn’t play for Ireland. If Robbie Keane did come to villa, I suspect Ireland wouldn’t. Of the two, i’d rather have Ireland, even if it breaks my heart he won’t turn out for Ireland.

I just read somewhere that Spurs would be willing to offer cash + Keane and Bentley for Milner.

“MON, get KEANE he is totally 100% PERFECT for Villa.”

Sorry to put a dampener on the ‘Robbie Keane for Villa’ campaign but its very important you seriously consider the following…

18 months ago Liverpool cut their losses on Keane after only 6 months into a 4 year contract, the direct financial loss being in the region of £7 million (not including wages and merchandise) – it’s fair to assume that Liverpool were very unhappy with the return on their investment, especially given the circumstances whereby they were chasing major honours

Tottenham re-signed Keane for £12 million on a 4 year contract and after just 12 months were prepared to release him to Celtic on loan – again it’s fair to assume that Tottenham were unhappy with the return on their investment, especially given the circumstances whereby they were chasing champions league football

Liverpool and Tottenham are arguably Villa’s closest rivals so clearly there should be consideration as to “why Keane is not good enough for them but good enough for us”… there should also be consideration as to what Liverpool saw wrong with the player and why Tottenham accepted him back on identical contractual terms therefore presenting financial loss to both parties – unless they both suddenly think he’s crap?

Robbie Keane for sure has a good reputation but I suggest you all wake up as nobody will be prepared to take a risk on the player going forward and certainly not the Villa

    Anthony
You should know that Rafa didn’t play him because it wasn’t his signing, which is exactly why he was sold. He’s an established EPL player and playing with Richard Dunne, he’d feel right at home. He’d get the supplies he needs from Young, Downing(ish), McGeady if he comes and Warnock (not Cueller).

I believe that ‘Benitez’ was indeed Liverpool manager when they signed Keane, to suggest that chief executive would sign a £19 million player without input from the manager would in fairness be a tad naive

With regards to not playing – 28 appearances (starting 23 of them) up to January doesn’t indicate that his failure was due to limited opportunity

He wasn’t good enough for Liverpool and now he’s not good enough for Tottenham but football is about opinion and I respect yours if you feel he is good enough for the Villa
