FIFA have announced that Howard Webb is to ref the World Cup final on Sunday between Holland and Spain and how is this Villa related you ask ?
I am sure in the past Webb has given us decisions and not given us them but for all of us I would think the FA Cup Semi Final particularly stands out.
OK I am may be a one eyed Claret and Blue Fan but he was awful that day, no worse than that. He never gave us nothing all game from the clear penalty on Gabby until the incident I will always remember him for.
What was it ? In the 73rd minute or so Milner was breaking through and the donkey John Terry desperate to prove he is a quality defender (ha ha) lunged if that is the right word with studs up straight into Milners lower leg. If Milner had had his foot on the ground it would have possibly been a compound fracture of his leg, the clearest sending off you will see.
The result, well Terry is a big name player and Webb speaks to them so he got just a yellow. To make matters worse he allowed play to go on and Petrov was breaking through and brought down by the already booked Deco and what happened, NOTHING.
Should have been two sendings off, clear and simple and we win the game
but Webb like Dowd bottled it in a big game where we had so called big teams playing.
A bottler and he gets to ref the final.
No justice.
Aston Villa News 24/7
I guess all the FIFA assesors think he’s a better ref than you do – but what do they know
).
To be honest, apart from the Mexican referee and the ref of yesterday’s game between Germany and Spain (whoever he was, Webb has probably been the best ref at the World Cup and desrves the final, I guess they also want a European ref to ref a game in the “european way” as we have a European final.
Paul I am still bitter over Webb still months on and always will be, he cost us the FA cup in my view
Best ref at the World Cup was that Japanese ref. He’s been very good this World Cup. Should be the only one to get the final.
IMHO It’s FIFAs way if trying to make up to the FA for Lampards goal that wasn’t given.

The World Cup has been fantastic. Now I understand why I hate English football.
Peter,
How you can say the Spain v Germany match was a great match is beyond me! This was one of the most boring specticals I have ever witnessed. Both teams playing with 5 in the middle, 1 man up front and 11 men behind the ball when the opposition have it! Spain, supposedly the best passing nation in the world could not create any chances of note and scored their only goal from a header. Germany, the tournament’s breath of fresh air, the young, fearless unknown quantity couldn’t get hold of the ball and when they did they struggled to keep it. If this is how you want English football to be played then count me out.
I admit the game has changed recently with the foreign owners and the large amounts of cash floating around but to be the best league in the world you have to compete with the top teams in the world, do you really think that without the obscene amounts of money changing hands in English football we would be able to compete with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona? Money is ruining the game but it is not just Enlish football, and it isn’t something that just happened overnight. Take Blackburn in the 90s, they were the first club to ‘buy’ the premier league title, other now are just following suit.
If you don’t like the English game, take a season watching La Liga, outside the top 3 or 4 teams the standard of football is poor. Watch Serie A where there is so much emphasis on defence that 1 goal is usually enough to win a game or watch the Bundesliga where one team has so much dominance that any German player worth his salt will play for them. I agree that English football is in decline but we are not the only country this is happening in!
Apologies for the novel, I got a bit carried away
Well all I know is that having loved football in the 70s, the Spain Germany match is one of the very few I’ve enjoyed since then. I think the only others have been in World Cup competitions. And the antics of the overpaid ponces I find completely repellent. They are walking, talking mascots to vulgarity and bad taste.
I’m sticking to rugby. It’s a real sport and a man’s game. At its very, very best football may have the edge in finesse but in every other way: skill, talent, attitude, intelligence, spirit, passion rugby make football look thin, insubstatial and a waste of time.
